Last-Minute School Kit – DIY & Video

by Jill September 4, 2014
written by Jill

As a mom of a 1st-grader now, I am totally profesh at this whole school-mom thing. So consider this me bestowing some of my infinite wisdom upon you all and sharing a cool tip that will make life easier when you have kids in school.

Or, you know, it could also be me making a post out of something I knew I had to do to try to stay sane and not appear like a negligent parent this year.

Either way, I present to you this thing I actually did and am actually hoping will actually make my life a little easier this year- The Last-Minute School Kit.

Now, I’m not saying all of these items will be requested from our teacher at the “last minute.” I’m just saying I usually only remember I need to send them at the last minute. So. That’s where that comes from

Last-Minute-School-Kit

1. A container of some sort for your kit. It doesn’t have to be fancy. You can use a tampon box. I won’t judge.

2. Ziploc bags are good to have on hand for when you need to send small items to school and it’s like the ONE time you don’t have any and think you’ll have to send 100 M&Ms (for the 100th day of school because, WARNING, THAT IS A THING) in an empty but still dirty chip bag, or something.

3. Tape & envelopes definitely come in handy when you need to send money to school, and want to be sure that money actually makes it to the teacher and not the bottom of your child’s backpack or piggy bank.

4. A small notepad of some sort for writing notes to the teacher like a proper grownup who is entrusted with raising a child so you don’t have to resort to the back of a Wendy’s receipt.

5. Blank notecards for when you want to get fancy. Great for writing Thank You cards, or for your child to draw/write a note of appreciation for their teacher on holidays.

6. Stationary if you want to get even fancier. Totally not necessary, but I’ve had some for forever, and I need to use it up.

7. A few gift cards in small amounts to universally loved places like Starbucks or Target. Great to slip into a holiday card or a thank you card. Also great to send to the nurse after your child projectile vomits all over her if you’re in the giving mood.

8. A pen & a Sharpie that are TAPED TO THE CONTAINER. Because we know kids purposely hide proper writing tools and get great satisfaction out of seeing us write absence excuses with a nub of eyeliner.

9. Post-its are great if you need to add notes to homework or folders and such.

10. Pictures of the school kid and family because YES you will need them, and NO you can’t send your kid to school with the iPad and the Flickr app open. Do yourself a favor and print them all old fashioned style on paper like people did in the 90s now.

11. Small change and dolla bills, yo. Because they are forever coming home with scraps of paper that say crap like, “2nd grade is selling bubble gum this Friday for a quarter!” and your kid will NOT go to sleep until they know you have at least 3 quarters to send with them. And sending 75 pennies you dug up from the floor of your car is generally frowned upon, I think. Not to mention you’ll smell like French fries the rest of the day if you have to resort to that.

As you can see, I have plenty of room left in my box. What else would you add?

How To Fold A Fitted Sheet… kinda

by Jill July 23, 2014
written by Jill

I know I’m really bad about coming up with big ideas and then not following through. Trust. I know. These things eat away at me. I still have monthly reminders that pop up on my iPhone, asking if I’ve completed and blogged my “12 in 12” yet. And no, I haven’t. Obviously.

But I really, really, really have the best of intentions. I’m a big thinker, and sometimes I think up lots of things and they all bubble out, and then eventually one of them grows big enough that I actually tend to it. Like this blog. And hopefully my YouTube channel.

I told myself I’d do one video a week, and I’m 2 for 2 so far. A little too proud of myself for that, I’ll admit. They say I need to be publishing these weekly videos at the same time on the same day every week in order to build a loyal audience. I don’t know if I have that in me. For now, I’m happy with weekly-ish new videos. I’ll aim for Thursdays. No promises.

It could be said my approach to all of this is very similar to my approach to housekeeping. I aim for clean-ish. No promises. If that’s your style, too. I think you’ll dig my video on how to fold a fitted sheet.

We Are All Here

by Jill July 11, 2014
written by Jill

So, so many of you reached out, commented on, and shared this story of motherhood, loss, appreciation, and immense love when I posted it in February.

Meet Maggie & Another Leyna was originally an email I got from a long-time blog commenter, turned friend.

And now, I’m so happy to say it’s a video of a live reading, titled “Here,” by Leyna herself at the Listen To Your Mother, Austin show this past May.

I promise you, it is worth the 7-ish minutes of your time. Just brace yourself for feelings. And tears.

“I am forever thankful for all the mommas in my life, and this motherhood journey we’re all on together because we are all…. here.”

Beautiful job, Leyna. What an honor it is to know you, and to see this story come to life.

Mr. Monster Wreath Makes His TV Debut

by Jill October 12, 2012
written by Jill

Little did I know that night I stayed up late tying tulle and pinning eyeballs onto a foam wreath that my Monster Wreath would blossom into such a popular fella.

I’m thrilled so many of you are making your very own monsters to decorate your doors this Halloween season! I’ve loved seeing all the variations of colors and personalities they’re taking on.

Today I got to demonstrate how to make a Monster Wreath on Texas Living (KTXD). A total blast! I hope to be back again soon with more crafts to share.

Mr. Monster right before we went on. He was looking a little nervous, but I assured him he’d be a hit.

If you live in the DFW area, you should check out Texas Living on KTXD at 11 a.m. on weekdays. It’s a great lifestyle show, packed with guests of all varieties. Today I shared the show with 2 penguins, a chef, a snake, and some entrepreneurs.

Also, a huge thanks to those of you who sent me your Monster Wreath photos to use!

One Hole

by Jill August 14, 2012
written by Jill

I wouldn’t want you all to think that all I post about these days are pretty pictures and crap. So, just to remind you all of my wicked sense of humor, I’m sharing this video that my friends from HowToBeADad pointed out to me. Because they know I secretly long to excrete a viscous goo with green and white specks… and lay eggs. Just like a chicken.

I’m certain this… errr… arrangement would make for an even easier med-free birth the next time around.

My Ghost Of Pregnant Christmas Past

by Jill December 26, 2011
written by Jill

Last Christmas I was massively pregnant, a day overdue, and a major bitch.

If one more person asked me if I’d had that baby yet…

I went from having a big baby in my belly last year to a big baby in my arms this year.

She turns 1 in 2 days! Her Christmas gift to us? Walking.

Leyna Walks <<Video… hopefully that works.

She Laughs! She Loves Him!

by Jill April 6, 2011
written by Jill

Before Leyna was born, I had a hard time imagining how her puzzle piece would squeeze it’s way into what felt like an already complete puzzle. I worried that Kendall would suffer because of it, or that she wouldn’t get the attention she deserves.

Our puzzle pieces still aren’t perfectly aligned yet. There are some gaps to fill in and some rearranging to do, but every day we get a little closer to forming a perfect new picture from the new pieces. Last night two pieces slid next to each other… and they finally fit.

Kendall and Leyna have had small interactions here and there, but they’ve mainly been ships passing, a sheepish smile or a quick hello exchanged before they moved on. Leyna does adore Kendall, she watches his every move and smiles any time he acknowledges her.

Leyna lives for Kendall to bounce toward her on the trampoline. She lights up every time.

We’ve been trying to get Leyna to laugh for a couple weeks now. She opens her mouth and makes the silent gasp-y laugh, but never anything more. At dinner last night, Kendall let out a loud laugh over who knows what, and Leyna immediately responded, which in turn made Kendall laugh harder, which in turn made Leyna. It was the first of many inside jokes shared between the two of them… and I caught it on camera.

Warms my puzzle piece shaped heart.

Am I a slacker or just in need of a digital solution?

by Jill January 8, 2010
written by Jill

Not much makes me feel worse as a mom than looking at the EMPTY baby book sitting in our office. It’s a gorgeous book, and it sits blank, silently whispering to me, “you SUCK”. I’ve tried to fill it out, I have. But, as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s really hard to reach into those cobwebs of my brain and retrieve parts of the hard drive I’ve purposely erased.

I filled a little bit out before Kendall was born, even took it to the hospital with us and had his little feet stamped in it. Then it got shuffled aside for the next three months while I dealt with the demon known as colic, a super shitty recovery, and a move halfway across the country. The next time I sat down to fill it out I got stumped within 5 minutes.

“The price of gas the day you were born was ______.”

Uhm, what? Now, I don’t know about you, but I sure as HELL was not checking out the price of gas on my way to the hospital.

Then it wanted to know things like the first time he rolled over, and all the stats from his previous appointments. I quickly became overwhelmed.  A lot can get away from you in the first foggy three months of a newborn’s life. To be honest, we weren’t good at documenting anything from that time.  We have a slew of newborn pictures from when he was still in the hospital taken by The Regetis (which I put together in this super sweet slideshow right before Kendall turned one), a couple taken by my mom when we got home, then nothing… no documentation for about two months, with the exception of the crazy week I spent house hunting in TX when Kendall was about a month old.

It makes me sad. He changed SO MUCH during that short amount of time and I didn’t do anything to preserve that.  Ninety percent of my memories from that time include a lot of screaming and crying (from the both of us), itchy rashes, fevers, puke, sleep deprivation and a touch of hysteria.

A couple months ago I suddenly remembered a long lost video we uploaded to YouTube of Kendall doing tummy time. I think he was a few weeks old. It warmed my heart and I couldn’t believe I’d forgotten about it. I’m going to share it here because I’m feeling all sappy and sentimental. It’s just 2 minutes of boring, adorable tummy time. Nothing special.

It’s so funny, he still makes those same faces and noises.

Okay, back to the baby book. I gave up. I didn’t know what the #1 movie was, didn’t know the gas prices, couldn’t remember the first time he rolled over. I kept putting it off and putting it off until it just all piled up. After nearly a year had gone by and I realized I’d never remember things like the order that his teeth came in or when he sat up unassisted for the first time,  I just stuffed the baby book on a lonely shelf in the office and walked away.

The thing is, I’m not a pen to paper person anymore. I’m quick to jot notes and emails on the laptop, can upload pictures to Facebook in a flash, but I just don’t do well physically writing things down anymore (and let me tell you, my handwriting suffers because of it).

I met Sherri from MyDigiTimeCapsule.com about a year ago on Twitter. She sponsored a giveaway here and donated to my Team In Training fundraiser by giving away a couple My Pregnancy Digi Time Capsules, a digital pregnancy journal housed in a stylish USB. When she asked me to try out her latest product, the My Baby Book Digi Time Capsule, I was thrilled! I’m a digital girl, obviously, and spend much more time on my computer than scrapbooking or pasting pictures in an album. I was so excited at the prospect of this device becoming the perfect “baby book” for me.

Granted, I got it when Kendall was 18 months old already, and I still don’t remember all that stuff, but there’s something very different about skipping the questions I don’t know on this software. It’s not the same feeling of “slacker” as leaving entire pages blank.

There are so many amazing features. You can add pictures, video and audio and even create your own slideshows set to music. Along with the traditional stuff like baby’s medical history and vaccine schedule, and all about mom and dad, you can also write letters to your child for the future. My favorite feature, though, has to be the family tree. You can upload pictures of each member of the family, input information about them and organize it into a digital family tree.

Now, it does make me sad that it’s not Mac compatible. I can only use it on our PC desktop, which could possibly go up in flames someday. So if you’re a Mac only household, you’re out of luck. If, however, you’re a PC, I really do recommend it. Even if you plan on keeping a traditional book, it can’t hurt to have this beauty (and it really is beautiful and comes in several styles) hanging from your keychain. You can quickly record memories while at work or just in between Facebook status updates.

Depending on which version you want, it’s anywhere from $29.95 to $51.50.

Sherri would also like to give one to a lucky reader, so comment below telling me that I’m not a slacker. Just kidding! ; P  But really, take a look at MyDigiTimeCapsule.com and tell me what your favorite feature is below. You can also get a second entry by tweeting about this contest. Make sure you use @BabyRabies and @Digitimecapsule in the tweet and comment here letting me know you did. I’ll use Random.org to draw a winner next Thursday, the 14th.

OH! And get this, I don’t even have very many pictures printed out. That is my biggest goal for this year. I want to get a solid photo album done by the time his second birthday comes around. It is really sad how much of my life lives on a computer. Must retrieve memories from the digital world.

Kendall is 20 months and some change, and don’t tell me this blog is his “baby book”. This blog will undoubtedly be the topic of many hours of therapy.

This post was sponsored by MyDigiTimeCapsule.com, who sent me the My Baby Book Digi Time Capsule to try for free.

Contest is closed. The winner is Teri with comment #11, as chosen by Random.org. Congrats!

My social experiment finally goes live

by Jill November 18, 2009
written by Jill

So remember how I gave up the internet for an ENTIRE WEEK? And remember how I lived to tell about it? Well, I can finally share the rest of the story with you all. I went on my internet sabbatical as part of a social experiment for DFW’s CBS 11. The story finally aired tonight. You can watch it here. Or just read the story here.

Couple of fun notes for you…

1. I kept meaning to clean my laptop, but never did. So in one of the close up shots of my computer you can see what looks like bits of orange crusted to it… or maybe just chunky dog slobber. Yummy.

2. After I put what looks like my peaceful son to bed for nap he screamed for about 5 minutes. No idea why they didn’t want that on camera.

I also kept a daily journal of sorts. You can read them here:

Internet Deprived Free Day 1

Roughing it 1990’s Style Day 2

Day 3, When I have to learn to use the phone again

Day 4, Oh, so that’s what a phonebook is for

Day 5, How to make friends the old fashioned way

Day 6, Is no internet making me a better parent?

Day 7, I’m out of witty titles

One week later, from the other side of internet detox

This was a really fun little experiment to take part in! I’m happy that Barb and Tina from Metroplex Baby thought of me and hooked me up with the great people at CBS 11. Now it’s their turn! The story of their week without their Blackberries will be on tomorrow night at ten.

Kendall is 18 and a half months old and he was OBSESSED with all the camera and light equipment

If any of you are new readers, let me first just say Welcome! and point you to a couple places. Here you can find a brief history, including some of my favorite posts on here. Here you can subscribe to my feed. Thanks so much for stopping by!
