Free Last-Minute Printable Valentines

by Désirée February 13, 2018
written by Désirée

Sometimes a holiday like Valentine’s Day sneaks up on you (“Oh crap, was I supposed to make cupcakes??”) and sometimes you know it’s coming and you still don’t get things done on time because it’s flu season, or life gets busy, or you really just didn’t want to make 30 Valentines with your toddler.

We totally get it and we’ve got your back.

Selective Memories- Can I Please Choose Them?

by Jill February 16, 2017

The following photo is not intended to make you feel inadequate about what you did or didn’t do for your family on Valentines Day:

Selective Memories- Can I Please Choose Them? | BabyRabies.com

I went a little nuts, but I’ll explain why in a bit.

Selective Memories- Can I Please Choose Them? | BabyRabies.com

Valentines Day dinner was made up of the foods the kids told me they “love”- mac & cheese for Leyna & Lowell, cranberry sauce for Kendall, bacon for, well, everyone.

I did try to sneak some heart shaped zucchini in there…

Selective Memories- Can I Please Choose Them? | BabyRabies.com

But they were much more interested in the heart-shaped bacon, and felt a little conned because nobody said they loved zucchini.

I apologize for the horrid attempts at food photography here. These pictures are looking straight out of a 70s cookbook with recipes for SPAM & lime JELLO casserole.

I surprised them with balloons, candy bouquets, and the cutest Valentine cards and buttons from this Instagram/Etsy shop I’m newly obsessed with- InkPug.  (We are SO that pug family now.)

Can we just have a moment for this card I got for Scott?

Selective Memories- Can I Please Choose Them? | BabyRabies.com

Maybe you’ve noticed I’m running really short on time for all the things right now? I mean, this blog is pretty neglected lately.

I don’t have time to keep up with laundry. I don’t have time to keep up with our messy house. I don’t have time to keep up with emails. I don’t have time to write.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! It’s like I forgot that newborns are SO SELFISH.

Selective Memories- Can I Please Choose Them? | BabyRabies.com

I was like, just sit here and hold his hand so I can step away for 2 minutes and he won’t feel like I’ve abandoned him, okay?

But I did take the time to do something special for Valentines Day, yes, for my kids, but also for me. I’ve felt so overextended. Making time to tuck the 2 bigs in each night is a huge ask of myself lately, and it used to be something I never let myself skip.

Christmas felt like a disaster to me. I know the kids won’t remember most of it, and they weren’t seeing it through postpartum hormone glasses, but I will remember, and I did. I needed a fun family do-over. I needed a home-run holiday. I needed to hear my kids say, “This was the BEST EVER!”

So I had some fun with Valentines Day, and it was exactly what my soul needed. And as much as I hope the kids don’t remember last Christmas, I hope they do file away a sweet memory or three from that time mom made bacon hearts and mac & cheese in a heart cake pan, and even pulled together some cranberry sauce in February for the best Valentines Day ever.

Simple & Sweet Valentine’s Day – A Video & Tutorial

by Jill February 13, 2016
written by Jill

Wow, you guys. This week. Ooph.

So Scott was traveling, and I know- I KNOW- that I can never ever count on weeks he’s gone as productive ones, but I just wanted to get ONE project done. Just one. Just this one.

I shot this on Tuesday. Shortly after, Lowell caught a stomach virus, and it was all downhill from there. No sleep. Mess everywhere. I couldn’t keep up. (I shared this behind-the-scenes video on my FB BEFORE everything got crazy. Yes, it got so much worse.)

Listen, I know Valentine’s Day is TOMORROW. And I doubt anyone is going to see this today and think, “Oh! I’m going to make that happen in the next 24 hours!” At this point, I’m publishing this and sharing because DAMMIT I worked hard on it.

Pin it for next year?

I mean, if you do have the stuff or you’re going to the store anyway, it really is VERY easy, which is why I shared it. And Kendall did enjoy it for “fake Valentine’s Day” last week.

Excuse his dirty little marker covered hands. We were busy living life over here when I shot this. And yes, that is Sharpie scribbled on my table.

The sugar cookies are a recycled idea I blogged a few years ago, so there’s more details there. My favorite sugar cookie recipe is Alton Brown’s for the Food Network.

No Cookie Cutter Heart Cookies & Homemade Strawberry Milk | BabyRabies.comNo Cookie Cutter Heart Cookies & Homemade Strawberry Milk | BabyRabies.com

For the frosting, I used 1 stick of softened butter, 1 package of whipped cream cheese (12 oz), 3 cups powdered sugar, and about 1/2 cup of strawberry pulp. It makes for more of a runny frosting, so if you’d like yours thicker, cut back on the strawberry pulp.

And I LOVE this strawberry milk with the heart-shaped ice cubes. You can get a similar heart mold on Amazon here.

Finally, I got me a Balloon Time tank and some red balloons. Because you know what adds a little bit of joy to anything? A balloon. Or three.

No Cookie Cutter Heart Cookies & Homemade Strawberry Milk | BabyRabies.com

So I’m definitely busting that out tomorrow, and we’ll make some more strawberry milk, and there will be conversation hearts and cookies, and we’ll call it a day. A Valentine’s Day. Simple & sweet. (And thank God Scott is home to celebrate with us… and help me clean up the mess.)

This Commercial Captures Valentines Day Perfectly For Me

by Jill February 12, 2014
written by Jill

This commercial stopped me in my tracks the other night. I stood there, arms full of papers and dirty socks and other bits I was attempting to put away.

Oh, okay pizza commercial, I thought. You just nailed it. And now of course we need a heart shaped pizza on Friday.

In a relationship, have young kids? I think it might resonate with you, too.

Edited to add!
Last night it was brought to my attention that there’s a more real-life web version of the commercial. Again, spot on.

*Not at all sponsored, but we do love Papa Murphys.

Nobody Wins At Valentines (And Nobody Loses)

by Jill February 11, 2014
written by Jill

It’s that time of year again, the time of year when some parents will get crafty, and bust out all the glitter and cutesy printables for their child’s Valentines. It’s the time of year when this will make some other parents crazy.

Why do they have to try to show everyone up? What is wrong with store bought Valentines?

As I predicted last year, I am not one of the moms who is doing anything but sending store-bought Skylanders and Hello Kitty cards and candy this year.

photo

But last year? I was that mom who made everything, and I so enjoyed it. And guess what? It wasn’t about showing anyone up or making anyone feel bad.

IMG_7308-2

So if you’re in the same boat I’m in this year, and you’re seeing all these adorable, elaborate Valentines creations popping up on Facebook and Pinterest, and then looking at the boxes of perforated unoriginality you just picked up at Target. If you’re maybe feeling a tinge of inadequacy or guilt or annoyance… just remember, it’s not about you.

And it goes both ways. (Click through for the post the following excerpt is from.)

Listen, if there’s one thing I’m not, it’s consistent. Who the hell knows how much energy I’ll have next year with a new baby. If I have to run out and buy store bought Valentines, so be it. I may be disappointed I don’t have the time to make any, but you know what I won’t do? Try to make others feel bad for the time they spent on theirs….

So you don’t want me to judge you for your kids’ store bought Valentines? Done! But it goes both ways, okay? Don’t assume that every homemade Valentine that your kids bring home today is made by a mom with the intention of showing people up, that’s it’s a little bag of “I’m better than you.” Maybe she’s just a mom who doesn’t always do things with her kids like paint and bake cookies, but this one time of year she did something special. And she’s feeling good about it because it was something she did with love for her kids.

It Goes Both Ways

by Jill February 14, 2013
written by Jill

If you’ve been checking in on my blog this week, you’re aware of the Valentine’s crazy crafty explosion up in here. You probably want me to shut up about Valentine’s Day already. I kinda do, too. I’m tired.

But I just have one thing to say about all this. It started as a Twitter rant, but I realized it would be better as a more thought out blog post.

All this stuff I’ve done this week? The homemade Valentines, the breakfast, the pics of my kids? None of that was to make anyone feel bad about their store bought Valentines or their chaotic, regular morning routine today. None of that was to “compete” with anyone or “impress” anyone.  None of that was about anyone but me and my kids.

I’ve seen a lot of rumblings on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram the last few days from parents who “don’t get it.” Why do some parents put so much effort into their toddler and preschoolers Valentines? Lots of assumptions that people like me are doing it to “show off” or because we “have too much time on our hands.” That we’ll “regret this next year” when we try to “top ourselves.”

Listen, if there’s one thing I’m not, it’s consistent. Who the hell knows how much energy I’ll have next year with a new baby. If I have to run out and buy store bought Valentines, so be it. I may be disappointed I don’t have the time to make any, but you know what I won’t do? Try to make others feel bad for the time they spent on theirs.

I had the time and a little surge of 2nd trimester energy this year. I made it happen for my kids this year. Heck, next year my then 5 year old will probably beg for the store bought Valentines over mommy’s creations.

You know what I didn’t do? Give any shits about Christmas. I was too tired and sick to care. But I know all of you who DID do amazing things with and for your family on Christmas didn’t do those things to make me feel bad or to compete with me.

You Can Do This! Easy Valentine’s Breakfast Ideas

by Jill February 13, 2013
written by Jill

I’m so excited to be on Texas Living today showing off this easy and healthy Valentine’s Day breakfast for the whole family with the last minute in mind. When they asked me to be on on the 13th to do something Valentine’s and craft related, I was at a loss. What could I show on the 13th that people would have time to do by the 14th?

Well, everyone’s got to eat, right? So I threw together a Valentine’s themed breakfast with more of a focus on fun than on sweets (since we all know there will be plenty of that the rest of the day).

Everything you need can be found at your local grocery store and craft store. If you’re lucky, the 2 will be close to each other and it will be a quick stop on the way home from work or errands.

For the table:

I covered it in white craft paper that I got at the craft/hobby store. You could also do brown packaging paper, which is sometimes found in the mail supply area at big box stores. In a pinch, just flip some old wrapping paper over, and cover the table white side up.

Then I used a red and pink Sharpie and drew “placemats” at each place with names above them and freehanded some hearts all around. I filled a few with what I loved about each person, and then left some empty hearts for the kids to color or to (tell me what to) write what they love about others in the family.

Dude. My handwriting. I KNOW. I don’t use those old fashioned writing devices much anymore. I’M A BLOGGER.

I bundled some crayons (leftover from the Valentines we made) and set them at each place setting because who doesn’t like drawing on a table?

 For the food:

A grapefruit sliced in half. Put a heart shaped cookie cutter on it (can find at a craft store or maybe your grocery store), and sprinkle some sugar… okay, lots of sugar inside. Then remove the cookie cutter.

Use that same cookie cutter to cut hearts out of a couple pieces of toast.

Pick up a box of Quaker Oats Whole Hearts cereal at the grocery store, and a tub of strawberries. To make the strawberries look like hearts, just gently pull off the leaves and stems, use a sharp knife to cut a v-shaped wedge out of the top, then cut in half. Top the cereal with your heart strawberries and add milk… in case the cereal thing is new to you.

That heart-shaped egg thing? Amazingly easy. Get you some silicone heart-shaped cupcake molds. Like these, or these. You can find them at your craft store in the baking section, and possibly at your grocery store.

For 6 molds, whisk together 6 eggs, a couple tablespoons of half and half or milk, a tiny bit of salt and pepper, and about a 1/2 cup of shredded cheese. Bake them at 350 for about 20 minutes. (Best to do this first thing, before you start decorating the table, so they’ll be done when you’re ready.) Once they are out of the oven and cooled off a bit, it’s super easy to pop them right out and plop them on a plate. My kids just eat them with their hands.

Oh, and what about this cute cup of juice?!

As simple as freezing some cranberry or cherry (or cran-cherry, in my case) juice in some tiny heart ice cube molds and popping them in some orange juice just as everyone sits down to eat. You should be able to get the ice cube tray at the craft store. Similar to this.

Worst case scenario: Use the cupcake molds. Fill them just a little bit, and just put one giant heart ice cube in each juice glass.

That’s it! Hopefully, even if you don’t use all these ideas, there’s something in here you can pull off by Valentine’s morning that will put a smile on someone’s face. It’s not a crazy, fancy, uber styled tablescape and menu. Just some quick, fun, healthy ideas you can throw together quickly to create some fun family memories.

If you live in North Texas, look for me on Texas Living today! I’ll be showing all this off and demonstrating… how to pour cereal in a bowl? The show is on KTXD, and starts at noon. I’ll come back and post the video here later for those who miss it.

You Color My World Valentines- Tutorial & Free Printable

by Jill February 11, 2013
written by Jill

Procrastinators, relax! There is still time to come up with something cute for your kids’ Valentines, and I promise it will look like you spent way more time putting it together than it will actually take.

What you need:

9 x 12 sheets of felt (each sheet makes 2 pouches)
Ribbon (each pouch requires 6 inches of ribbon)
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Fabric scissors
Ruler
Crayons (each pouch holds 8)

Optional:
Pinking shears
Color My World printable Valentines (download here)

Start by folding your sheet of felt in half, lengthwise, and cut down the middle.

Cut a piece of ribbon 6″ long, and wrap it around the front of the felt, one inch from the top, securing the excess on each side with hot glue to the back.

Fold the felt 4″ from the “top”… or bottom at this point? The edge where you put the ribbon closest to.

Run a bead of hot glue along each 4″ edge of the pouch (sides only, not the top) and adhere the sides together.

If you have pinking shears, use those to slightly trim the other edge of the pouch.

With regular scissors OR pinking shears (whatever you’re working with), cut the corners of this edge at an angle.

Fill with 8 crayons.

Most crayon boxes seem to come in multiples of 8. See how easy I made it for you?
Pro Tip: Buy in bulk and save. Michaels has all Crayola products for buy one get one 50% off right now, including mega boxes of 120 crayons.

Tuck top flap into the ribbon.

Print off these free Valentines! (But not actually THOSE… down there. That picture is a low-res version. CLICK HERE FOR THE HI-RES PRINTABLE.)

Not digging your printer quality? Check out places like Office Depot that let you email the file to them and pay online, so all you have to do is swing by and pick them up an hour later. I highly recommend printing them on cardstock.

Cut out and have your kids color them in for a personal touch. I had to help my 2 year old with her name, but she was thrilled to “co co” the hearts.

Slip the Valentine inside the ribbon of each pouch and you’re all set!

I would say it takes about 5 minutes (or a little less) to make one pouch, but you could get that time down if you do it assembly line style for several. That’s how I plan to spend my evening tomorrow. I’ve got 24 to make, and I anticipate dedicating an hour to it.

I hate that I got this up so late in the game, but you know me… the procrastinator. For all you fellow procrastinators looking for a last minute (candy free!) idea, I hope this helps!

I’m In The Mood For Love And To Give Away Windows Phones

by Jill February 8, 2013
written by Jill

Love is in the air, right?

No? More like snow is in the air and on the ground and OMG SOMEBODY BETTER SHOVEL THAT SOON?

I mean, not for me… in Texas. It’s a glorious 60 something here and the sun is shining. Don’t hate. You’ll have your weather envy revenge on me the months of June through September… possibly October.

What I’m saying is LOOK, PHONES! Distraction! Shiny!

Let’s pretend love really is in the air. And that love could win you not just one, but TWO new Windows phones. Red ones! On Valentines Day!

You love me so hard right now, don’t you?

I’ve already told you the story of how Scott and I met, so if you want the full version, check it out here. The short story? I stalked him the first half of my sophomore year of college (after discovering him at my local grocery store), then he finally wound up at one of the tables I was waiting at a sports bar. We talked all night, he asked for my number, and the rest is history. That was 12 years ago as of this January 31st. TWELVE YEARS.

Stalking pays off!

The Windows phone team wants to celebrate love by giving you a chance to share your “how we met” story on Facebook. I made mine earlier today and it was, frankly, adorable. Though I think it will be even cooler for those of you who actually met your significant other when you both had Facebook accounts… or if you met ON Facebook. It will probably make you squee. (NOTE! It doesn’t have to be a story of how you met a love interest. It can be a friend!)

Give it a whirl here with the Windows How We Met app!

All you have to do is comment with a link to your How We Met story, and you’ll be entered to win the TWO Windows phones I’m giving away on Valentines Day- one for you and one for someone you love… or just like, a lot. I get it. Commitment can be scary.

Here are all the details:

1. Winner will receive 2 red Windows phones- 1 8x by HTC and one Nokia Lumia 920
2.  These phones work with US phone providers and contest is open to US readers
3.  Entries close at 11:59 p.m. CST February 13th
4. The winner will be announced on this blog post and contacted on February 14th
5. Obviously, you’ll need a Facebook account to participate in this

Use the instructions in the Rafflecopter widget below to enter. You MUST use the widget. Don’t just comment, or you won’t be counted.
