My September Fix from Stitch Fix

by Jill September 22, 2014
written by Jill

Hiiiii!!

Okay, the last 3 weeks have been BANANAS. Lots of travel, which has been equal parts YAY and Wait? What time zone am I in? Is it breakfast or bedtime?

But mostly YAY.

I’ll share more later this week about some of it, including how I, like, WENT TO Stitch Fix. Oh yes. I visited their offices and their warehouse and there was a photoshoot and OMG how is this my life?

For now, though, let me just go ahead and share what they sent in my September box because they nailed it and quite a few of you keep requesting to see these things.

Stitch Fix- Daniel Rainn- Tara Abstract Print Roll Tab Blouse- $68

1. Daniel Rainn- Tara Abstract Print Roll Tab Blouse- $68
Oddly flattering despite it’s flowy shape. It’s really long in the back, giving my butt ample coverage in leggings, but also pairs well with my jeans. And I LOVE the print on this.

Stitch Fix 41Hawthorn- Filbert 3/4 Sleeve Popover Blouse- $58

2. 41Hawthorn- Filbert 3/4 Sleeve Popover Blouse- $58
This black top is a great staple. It’s a tiny bit snug on the boobs, but I’m hopeful it will fit better as my milk supply decreases or I lose a couple pounds. Please ignore my disappearing left breast in this pic. Not the best choice of bra for modeling in.

Stitch Fix- Fun2Fun- Erika Elephant Print Sleeveless Henley Blouse- $28

Stitch Fix- Fun2Fun- Erika Elephant Print Sleeveless Henley Blouse- $28

3. Fun2Fun- Erika Elephant Print Sleeveless Henley Blouse- $28
After my last Fix, I started a Pinterest board for my stylist to get a better idea of what I really want to try out. I pinned a shirt I loved from ModCloth with elephants on it. I just have a thing for elephants. So imagine my glee when I opened the box to find this top! And then imagine my audible joy to see that it was only $28! Total keeper. I don’t love it on it’s own because it’s a tad boxy, but paired with a cardigan? Swoon!

Stitch Fix- Margaret M- Duboce Straight Leg Jean- $68

4. Margaret M- Duboce Straight Leg Jean- $68
OMG, these jeans. These green jeans! My favorites for many reasons. For one, I would never pick green jeans for myself, but I love the color! The cut, the stretch- it’s all just perfect. But what makes these AMAZING is the stretchy waist. They just pull right on. No buttons or zippers! It’s like maternity pants, but not maternity pants.

Stitch Fix- 41Hawthorn- Carson Graphic Chevron Cross-Front Blouse- $64

5. 41Hawthorn- Carson Graphic Chevron Cross-Front Blouse- $64
I’m not actually trying to dance a jig in this picture. I just have NO idea how to pose for these things. Fashion blogger, I am not. Anyway, In theory, this top is great. It’s a good shape on me, and great, easy access for breastfeeding. I like the print and the color. It’s just too small on my boobs and does a weird peekaboo thing under them. It didn’t make sense to send it back, though, since I loved everything else. And I think I WILL love this, like with the black shirt, when my boobs calm down a little.

So, yup, I wound up keeping all 5 pieces this time. And that means I got the 25% discount. I’m so glad this box was a winner because I really needed some outfits to wear while I was traveling.

What I loved from my September Stitch Fix Box

I can’t wait to tell y’all more about my trip to San Francisco for the Stitch Fix Vacay. If you know me, you know that sometimes I get really passionate and excited about companies that I think are just plain awesome and doing it right. I’m officially there with Stitch Fix. From their story (woman-owned company WOOT!) to how they treat their employees to how obvious it is that they truly care about what they are doing and constantly working to make it better.

Anyway, I could go on and on, but I won’t right now. I’ll save that for later in the week when I have more time to talk about it.

Instead, let me end with a couple quick notes.

1. If you are a SF customer and don’t already have a Pinterest board linked to your account for your stylist to stalk, DO THAT NOW. I definitely noticed my stylist really took note of what I had on there before putting together this last Fix, right down to tracking down an elephant top and finding more bohemian-inspired prints for me.

2. This is not a low-budget service. It’s not. I get that $68 for a shirt is A LOT of money for many people. I get that you can buy 2-3 shirts for that if you shop the sales at certain stores. I get that not everyone can afford this every month.

That said, you don’t have to do this every month! IF you want to try it, and IF you can set aside $50-200 for yourself every few months, then do that. Have it come 3-4 times a year. Have fun picking out just one thing from the box if that’s all you can afford.

Just be sure to fill out a super detailed profile and create a Pinterest board with pics of yourself in stuff you love, and looks you love, and other Stitch Fix pieces you want to try. This will give your stylist an even better chance of nailing at least one piece in your box so you don’t lose your $20 styling fee.

Okay, if you haven’t signed up for Stitch Fix yet, and you want to, you can go here to do so. That’s my referral link, and I get a SF credit when people use it. And then after you sign up? You can share your link with friends and family and earn credits, too!

If you’re already a SF member, I’d love to hear what you got this month! Got a blog post about it? Link up in the comments!

Stitchfix August Box- What I Love, What I Don’t

Stitchfix August Box- What I Love, What I Don’t

by Jill August 18, 2014
written by Jill

I got another box from Stitch Fix last week, and it was so much better than last month’s. Quite a few people requested I share what they send me again, so here ya go:

(No, I’m not totally obsessed with my phone. I have an app on it that lets me use it as a remote for my camera. I do these things when I have the house to myself because 3 kids. Hence the posing with the phone in less than stellar lighting.)

I loved this navy/red top before I even put it on. It was one of those where I was like, “Please fit, please fit, please fit,” as I pulled it over my head. It will be easy to take this into cooler months with a cardigan and jeans. I paired it here with a skirt I already had in my closet.

41Hawthorn Flynn Colorblock Sleeveless Blouse- $58- KEEP

I liked the idea of this top, and was on the verge of keeping it, but it just didn’t flatter me enough to justify the price tag. I don’t really need long ties drawing attention to and adding to my already big boobs. I don’t know. If I’d liked everything else enough to keep, I would have kept this one just because it would have been discounted, and I would have worn this with a cardigan or maybe a belt.*

41Hawthorn Bell Chevron Textured Tie-Neck Blouse- $68- SEND BACK

Oh dear God. Yeah, let me put this super stretchy clingy dress with horizontal stripes on. That will look great on my not-toned tummy and huge boobs. NOPE. I didn’t even have to try this on to know it wouldn’t work, so you’re welcome for the extra effort I took for this pic.

(And check out that bruise on my shoulder from my vicious baby!)

Under Skies Connor Racerback Mixed Striped Maxi Dress- $58- SEND BACK

Okay, these pants? They’re like pajama pants. But socially acceptable to wear in public ones! So, like, OBVIOUSLY keeping those. And the shirt is a great staple for cooler weather, but not so hot I can’t wear it with shorts as the summer comes to an end. And the price of both of these was too good not to say yes. I was shocked at the price of the pants!

41Hawthorn Aspen Boat Neck Striped Cotton Tee- $48- KEEP
Kut From The Kloth Tivola Wide Leg Chambray Pant- $48- KEEP

*The thing to remember is if you do keep all 5 pieces, you get a 25% discount. So sometimes, if there’s just one piece you don’t like, it almost doesn’t make sense to send it back. I know friends who will keep the 5th piece and save it for a gift.

Have any of you started to receive Stitch Fix shipments? How did your last box work out for you? Do you have a Pinterest board for your stylist? I just started one. Hoping I can get them to send me some more… bohemian-inspired pieces? But nothing too crazy. And some more bright colors and patterns.

Stitch Fix, Fix My Sad Closet

Stitch Fix, Fix My Sad Closet

by Jill July 22, 2014
written by Jill

Last year I got an invite to a fashion blogger thing in L.A. I laughed from inside the warmth of my hoodie, and pushed my greasy hair back from my face before I deleted it.

I am not good with the dressing myself thing. I mean, I can get dressed. I don’t typically go out in public naked. I just… it’s nothing special, the stuff I’m wearing. It’s mostly ill fitting and probably wrinkled, maybe even a little dirty.

I don’t think I’m inherently fashion challenged. If I had the time and the money, I think I could put together a pretty nice wardrobe for myself.

These days, though, those are both a limited resource. Even as I’ve come to the place where I have a little bit more of a budget for clothes than I did in those early days of my stay-at-home-mom career, I actually have far less time now.

I imagine a lot of you have heard other bloggers and maybe some of your friends talk about Stitch Fix. If you haven’t, or aren’t clear on what it is, it’s basically an online personal styling service for women (up to a size 14 at this point). You fill out a pretty detailed fashion profile, and you can even create a Pinterest board for your fashion inspiration. You schedule a box, then pay a $20 styling fee and a stylist puts together 5 pieces based on your budget preferences and profile. They ship it to you, you try stuff on, keep what you want, and send the rest back (in a postage-paid bag they provide you) within 3 days.

It’s the closest I’ve ever come to having a personal shopper and/or stylist. I’ve done a few boxes since the beginning of the year, and finally signed up for the monthly shipment option since I’ve always found at least one item per box that I love.  (If you don’t keep anything in the box, you lose your $20 styling fee. If you do keep at least one thing, it’s applied to the cost of that.) I planned on doing this review-ish post about it for y’all before I even got this month’s box, so naturally this was my least favorite shipment. I only kept one piece. In the past, I’ve kept anywhere from the whole dang thing (and you get a discount if you keep all the pieces), to 3 pieces.

Here’s what they sent me this time:

IMG_4607 They are very thoughtful when it comes to my “breastfeeding friendly” requests. In theory, this maxi-dress ($78) should be perfect. It’s super soft, and has a snap at the chest that allows for easy access. Unfortunately, I have no natural waist line (yay apple shape!), and could not figure out where to put the elastic on this. Also, despite being tall, maxis look horrible on me. And they hide my best feature- my legs. No likey. It went back. IMG_4634 This sweater ($78) was simply baffling. I wondered if I even knew how it should work. On the picture that came with it, it looked a lot more drapey than this. So it’s very possible it was just too small for my lactating boobs. IMG_4641 I don’t think the stylist gets that even if this did fit, I literally wouldn’t be able to wear it until at least late October here in Texas. It also went back. (Also because no way could I spend nearly $80 on this.) IMG_4630 This jean jacket ($118) was, again, small for my chest size currently, but I would have considered keeping it if I didn’t already have one nearly identical to it. IMG_4623 My 2 very favorite pieces were this navy tie-top, button up blouse ($68), and these jean shorts ($88). I was on the verge of keeping the shorts, but they are a smidge too big, which will mean they’ll be hanging off my butt after 6 hours. And also? $88 for cutoffs? I just can’t. I can’t.

The blouse is very forgiving and flattering, and can easily be dressed up or down. It’s a quality piece that I feel will wear and wash well. Ultimately, it’s the only thing I kept, and I’ve already packed it for Blogher this week. But hey, I consider this whole thing a win if there is at least one thing in each box that I genuinely want. So I’m not displeased.

I know a lot of you might be balking at the prices right now. I’ll be honest, this is not a service for people who are die-hard bargain shoppers. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a sale, and I definitely can’t afford to fill my closet entirely with pieces at these prices.

That said, I realize I’m paying for 1. convenience (time is money, and I don’t have the time to go shopping) and 2. professional styling advice. The pieces they send me are not always what I would pick out for myself. I would have looked at that blue blouse on a hanger or on a website and  passed it up. When I pulled it out of the box, it was actually what I was least excited to try on.

So, for now, the monthly Stitch Fix box is a fun treat for myself. And even if I’m only adding one quality piece to my wardrobe a month, I feel like it’s worth it.
