Consider This, Moms: A Solo Staycation For Mother’s Day Or Any Day

by Jill May 9, 2018
written by Jill

You know we sold our house last year and decided to travel fulltime in an RV with our 4 kids because we thought that would make our life… easier? Or… I don’t really know what we were thinking, but I do know I was fully intending on writing MORE here, not less. And hopefully I will soon.

Read on if you are looking for THE BEST last minute Mother’s Day gift for yourself or someone else!

It’s just that this lifestyle has a pretty steep learning curve and the first 5 months (OMG almost half a year already!) have flown by and we are just now feeling like we finally have things figured out. That’s really just another way of saying LIFE HAS BEEN STRESSFUL. (And glorious and beautiful and amazing, but very stressful.)

A Dallas Great Wolf Lodge Staycation- Because I’m Too Pregnant To Leave

by Jill July 7, 2013
written by Jill

About halfway into this pregnancy, I thought, “Oh, we simply MUST take the children to the beach this summer!” I envisioned beautiful sunset photos, perhaps even some of me and my swollen, pregnant belly, surrounded by my kids building sandcastles. I bought them cute swimsuits and matching, personalized towels for their Easter baskets in anticipation.

We’ll just chalk that up to 2nd trimester delusions. The kind you get when you have that brief surge of energy and seemingly return to normalcy… right before the 3rd trimester squashes your dreams.

By the end of May, following a string of back-to-back-to-back travel for me, I was over it. No way was I getting my increasingly cumbersome middle section into a car and driving for more than 8 hours to get to the coast. And I certainly was not going to chase my kids up and down a sandy beach with no fences or gates to be found anywhere, all under the blazing sun. NOPE.

Time for plan B. I really did want the kids to experience a bit of a vacation this summer, and I wanted it to happen before baby gets here and we’re all forced to live in the house for a month or two while we wait out 100+ temps.

IMG_4102

We went to Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, TX (right outside of Dallas) last fall for just the day with day passes from the Boys & Girls Club fundraiser. (To my knowledge, this is the only time of the year you can get into GWL without staying overnight). The kids had a blast, and we knew that they’d have even more fun being just a smidge older, so the timing of going back a couple weeks ago worked out perfect.

A staycation was just what we needed.

IMG_4082

We stayed for 2 nights, and got to play at the park for 3 days. It was just the right amount of time. There was no rush to do everything in one day, and we were able to go to the water park in 2 to 3 hour bursts and then return back to our room to recharge (or take naps) without feeling like we were missing out.

IMG_4099

A lot of people have asked if I felt like Leyna was too young. She’s 2.5, and I think she had so much fun. She didn’t go on any of the big slides, but she had no desire to, either. She didn’t even want to go to the bigger kids play area (the one with the giant bucket that dumps on your head every so often… that was pretty much terrifying to her).

That said, there was plenty of fun to be had in the little kids play area. The little slides there were her absolute favorite. She probably went down them 30 or more times.

IMG_4152

IMG_4166

The wave pool was also a fun thing to do with both the kids, but only in small doses.

IMG_4223

Kendall enjoyed hanging out in the little kids play area, mostly so he could practice snorkeling. But I think his favorite part was riding the big slides with daddy. He could ride all but two.

IMG_4187

IMG_4188

The one part of the park none of us really cared for was the lazy river. I’m not even sure if this is technically what GWL calls it, but let me just tell you, there is NOTHING “lazy” about it, and there is no way to ride it without coming out completely soaked. I wasn’t too fond of the middle-aged men on the platforms above us who found enjoyment in dumping buckets of water on Leyna and me as we went under. Leyna was already visibly upset by the falling water at that point, and I was just trying to get her to an exit. We stuck to the kids play area after that.

IMG_4158

Then we headed out to the outside pool, and even though it was pretty hot outside, it was a nice escape from the chaos of the indoor water park. We were able to just relax, and it was much easier to keep an eye on the kids out there.

GWLPool

It may seem like it could get boring, being there for 3 days, but the good news is there’s much more to do beyond the water park. We spent a good amount of time in the arcade one afternoon.

IMG_4119

Kendall and Scott managed to become Master Magis in the MagiQuest game. I don’t know exactly how that worked since I chose to nap or eat in our room (along with Leyna) while they played. I just know a wand was involved, and it was about the coolest thing ever for Kendall.

Maybe just a smidge cooler or as cool as the Kids Kamp suite we stayed in, which featured semi-private bunk-beds and a TV for the kids. Yeah, Leyna tried to climb onto the top bunk, and she succeeded a few times, but we knew to keep an eye on her, and when she was asleep, she was totally out on her bottom bunk.

GWLBunks

We did bring a few snacks to keep in the room (there’s a mini-fridge and a microwave in each one), and I also brought some pink lemonade mix and water bottles to make our own drinks every day. This helped us through snack times, mostly. The food served there was, surprisingly, not bad and not overpriced, in my opinion. I mean, it wasn’t gourmet, but it was pretty good.

To give you an example, a large cheese pizza cost $11.99. A couple times, we ordered pizza and then took it to a table inside the water park and ate there. It was plenty for all of us (even when my sister got there to help out on day 2). There’s also a more traditional restaurant that I’d say has food and prices comparable to Applebees. We didn’t try out the buffet.

GWLPizza

My one regret was we didn’t purchase a PawPass. Looking back, it would have been more than enough for both the kids to use, splitting up the different perks that it comes with. It could have paid for Kendall’s MagiQuest game and wand, and Leyna could have got a glitter tattoo, etc. Even without it, we managed to keep extra spending from getting out of control.

And maybe the question most of you have is: Was it hard to do while pregnant? I was 35 weeks at the time, and yeah… it was a butt kicking. Thankfully my sister came up on the 2nd day to help out. I really just stood in the little kids play area most of the time or sat on the edge. But even just walking back and forth to the room was exhausting. It was worth it, though.

IMG_4205

I mean, since when are vacations/staycations with kids at all relaxing for parents? At least I knew going into it I’d need a 7 day nap when we got home.

If you’re looking for more helpful tips on how to plan a trip to Great Wolf Lodge and what to expect, I can’t say it any better than my friend Stephanie did. Her posts were what I referred to when getting ready for our trip. You can read them here:

I Keep Meaning To Blog, But…

Then summer keeps happening.

IMG_3963

IMG_3983And my 3 hours of productivity a day are often spent putting on and taking off little swimsuits, and covering little legs and arms in sunscreen.

IMG_4016

IMG_4018

Or taking Leyna to the potty. She’s nearly potty trained, but not really. It’s a strange little tightrope we’re walking with it all right now, but I’m very hopeful she’ll be mostly out of diapers (except for night and naps) by the time the baby comes… except not on days she has Mothers Day Out. Just for the summer session. She’ll be in Pullups those days (trust me, I’m groaning with you right now, I HATE them) because she only has one teacher in her classroom most of the time. So… it’s… we’re working with them on this. For now.

IMG_4059

IMG_4067

And, uhhh… I’m currently looking into switching to a new midwife. At 35 weeks pregnant. It’s a long story that I really can’t get into right now, but I will eventually. So that’s been a real blast.

Tomorrow we head off to the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, TX for a little family staycation. A few months ago, I planned to take the family to the beach this month. Then I got really pregnant and decided that was the stupidest idea ever. But an indoor water park that’s 30 minutes from home? Yes. We can do that.

Oh, and then there’s this thing I’m doing this Friday. Remember I told y’all how I’m going to make my national TV debut by revealing to the world that I eat sand? Yeah. That’s a real thing. So I’ll be Skyping from Great Wolf Lodge to… further embarrass myself? Is that even possible?

How I Spent My Kid-Free Staycation

by Jill October 28, 2010
written by Jill

This update is coming later than I originally planned for a couple reasons. 1. I got some sort of wretched stomach bug/24 hour flu a couple days ago, barfed my brains out (for the first time this pregnancy!) and spent almost the entirety of yesterday sleeping and/or complaining. I was even too sick to tweet! *GASP* 2. Uhm, the kid is HOME now, which means productivity levels went from nearly a 10 to 1, and blogging suffered because of it, wouldn’t you know.

I’ve been itching to tell you all about it, though, so let me just start by saying it was one of the most wonderful weeks ever! I mean, as much as we enjoyed our vacation to Sonoma earlier this year, I think we got more satisfaction out of this one, and we didn’t even leave our zipcode most days. Our outings mainly consisted of those to Lowes since we decided on a whim to redo the kid’s bathroom, complete with ripping up and replacing tile.

Side note- the Pica is still going strong. The little bits of mortar that my husband was chipping up from the bathroom floor looked as appetizing as Cheddar and Sour Cream Lays Potato Chips, the grout he laid down looked as delicious as buttercream frosting. I kid you not. Yes, I spoke with my midwife about it. No, she *wasn’t* alarmed. This is… common??

My mother is an angel and the world’s best grandmother, or “Nae Nae” as Kendall insists on calling her. She had him for a solid 7 days, and we got SO MUCH DONE. We really must make this a yearly tradition. It’s not like I didn’t miss the kid, because I surely did, but the anxiety I felt after dropping him off rapidly faded and was replaced with the awesome sense of accomplishment as we crossed things off our mile-long to do list.

Sure, our week wasn’t as full of resting and relaxation and formal date nights as I’d hoped, but we still managed to connect and have fun together. I’m fairly certain we never even got into a heated argument a single time we were at Lowes (though there were still several disagreements). When you are away for vacation, I think it’s expected that your relationship will perk up a little bit, the arguments will subside, but it was so nice to experience that same feeling while living our “normal” life at home.  And since Kendall’s returned, I find we’re both working harder to be a little more patient with him and with each other.

So a rousing recommendation from me for more kid-free staycations!! You should really give it a try if you haven’t been so lucky to yet.

Now, time to brag.

As you may recall, I spent much of my week in my own personal sewing hell. Not only did I have my temperamental sewing machine and her bitch-ass bobbin to deal with, but I also had a new frenemy, the Olfa Rotary Cutter, who damn near sliced off the top of my finger. (For real, people, do not underestimate the deadliness of this crafty tool. I’m sleeping with it under my pillow the nights Scott is gone so I can get deadly crafty on intruders if need be.)

While Scott slaved away on the bathroom remodel, shouting obscenities at his equally deadly mortar scraper thingy (hmmm.. I’m beginning to wonder how much our relationship really benefited from having inanimate objects to scream at for the week), I sweat and swore and knocked out baby girl’s crib skirt, baby blanket, and curtains lined with blackout fabric.

I still have a few sewing projects to tackle, like the crib rail guard and a couple pillow covers, and we still have some furniture and accessories to add to the room, but here’s what I’ve got so far.

The baby blanket is definitely a labor of love, but not so much skill. Crooked stitches and wonky ruffles turned “pleats” abound. Never, ever try to hand ruffle 9 yards of fabric. Never.

Not quite satisfied with the curtains. I think I’m going to move the rod up a bit and put them on those clippy hook thingies. The blackout fabric was a huge PITA, but it makes all the difference. That room feels 10 degrees cooler.

This is the next big project I’ve got to tackle. We’re adding a hutch to the right of the changing pad where we can display her “worldly souvenirs,” like the Matroyshkas I just won on Ebay! Then I have some crafty things up my sleeve for decoration above it. The dresser is from Ikea (surprisingly sturdy, I’ll add) and the trash can is for cloth diaper laundry.

Not too shabby for a week’s worth of work in the third trimester, eh? We also managed to organize the garage a bit and finally figured out what to do with 3 of our 5 strollers (and I swear, every SINGLE one of them gets used- or will be- and has a purpose). Scott screwed in some $9 bike hooks to the studs and whala!  So much better than the real estate they were taking up in our front room, temporarily turned stroller garage.

I wish I could say we accomplished everything on the list that gives me anxiety daily, but at least we made a considerable dent. To top the week off, we got to go to a bar where we watched, in it’s ENTIRETY, the Mizzou Homecoming game vs. OU, and we got to see the most epic smackdown, not missing a single play. We ate greasy, spicy appetizers and Scott drank like he was in college again, which I found to be pretty amusing and was secretly jealous. Best. Date night. Ever. GO TIGERS!!

Night 1 of Our Child Free Staycation- I Admit I’m Panicking A Bit

by Jill October 17, 2010
written by Jill

My mother raised three children to adulthood, my mother kept all three of us alive, my mother is a more than capable caregiver…. *deep breath.*

I just handed Kendall off to my mom, gave her complete responsibility for him for the next week. I am CHILD FREE (with the exception of the one that takes up the space in my uterus and keeps kicking me in the bladder) for the next WEEK.

I should be rejoicing, cartwheeling, partying it up, watching a Teen Mom marathon and eating junkfood without having to hide.

I should not be fighting off mommy visions of my 2 year old running off into streets, climbing under cars, getting into trouble, harming himself. I should not be fighting off this anxiety. This is completely unfounded. My mother is going to be just fine taking care of him… right?

It’s just, he’s SO active, and he has a tendency to not listen, and he wears *me* out, and I’m used to him. I’ve been gearing up for the marathon that is toddlerhood for the last 2 years. I have the endurance built up.

AND I’m a paranoid, first-time parent who might have a bit of a control issue. There’s that, too. My helicopter tendencies might be making me twitch just a little, I will admit.

She’s watched him before overnight. Once when we planned to run the marathon in San Antonio last year but wound up with a killer case of food poisoning instead, and once when we went to Sonoma for 4 nights. Each of those times, though, we were doing something, going places, pre-occupied… or vomiting our neurosystems out. We weren’t at home without him. We weren’t just here... living life… like we did before he was born.

So we have a week to spend with each other, to give a little more attention to the dogs. to work on getting some house projects done, and to maybe just go out a few times. We don’t have to worry about bathtime or bedtime tonight. I can sleep in tomorrow as long as I want. I can just pick up and go to the store whenever I feel like it.

I know it’s going to be an awesome “staycation,” and I know Kendall is going to have a BLAST on his vacation away from us out in the country. And my mom? She’s going to be great… but I have a feeling she’s going to be the one in need of a little relaxation come next Sunday night.

Have you ever sent your kid(s) away just so you could spend some time doing nothing (or a lot) around the house? What did you do with your time?
