Master Bedroom & Nursery Nook Reveal!

by Jill December 12, 2016
written by Jill

I am one step closer to TOTALLY READY to evict this baby. Our bedroom and nursery nook are done! NESTING SO HARD.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

This glorious transformation and post brought to you by Carousel Designs – www.babybedding.com

We teamed up with Carousel Designs on the crib bedding and curtains. It was our starting point, and everything came together from there. Their HUGE selection of fabrics for custom bedding designed by me, made by someone else (the BEST combo ever) made it easy to create pieces that were fun and whimsical enough for a baby-centered space without being too cheesy for a grownup room.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

The crib sheet is made with Gray Willow fabric, and the crib skirt is made with Silver Gray Linen. We opted for no crib bumper. (More room details to come further down in the post.)

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

Originally, I worried how to tie the nursery space into the rest of the room, but these 96″ x 42″ drape panels in Gray Ikat Damask are all grown up. We chose the basic lining since we have blinds in here, too, but blackout fabric lining is also an option.

The changing pad cover is a pop of color in Aqua Herringbone.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

It is crazy easy to use Carousel Design’s Nursery Designer to design everything you need for baby’s room. You can even select wall colors, flooring, and crib finishes to match what you have in mind.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

They also have a super awesome feature that lets you design and personalize a crib sheet or changing pad cover. We are all over this! As soon as I have this baby and we figure out what his name is.

I wish I could have used Carousel Designs for the last 3! Remember that time I made all of Leyna’s bedding and curtains? Nearly. Killed. Me. This would have been a far better option that would have resulted in much straighter stitches and much less blood from that dang seam ripper.

Now, let’s get to the rest of the details of the room, shall we?

I think first I should show you what this place looked like before.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

Oof. It wasn’t pretty. We moved in 2 years ago, but of course, this room fell to the bottom of our priority list. We finished nearly every other room in the house and hadn’t got further than the (horrible choice in) paint samples on the walls in here.

As you can see, it’s huge (thank you, Texas real estate), and we weren’t doing anything with that side of the room, other than leaving my luggage there, still packed,  between trips.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

We needed a good excuse and a swift kick in the pants to get this place put together. We thought, let’s go all out. Let’s make a whole space just for the baby in here, and not worry about turning our 5th bedroom upstairs into a nursery. I quite like having a guest room, especially because I quite like having guests who will come and help me take care of this baby.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

So the idea of a “nursery nook” came to be. He’ll be in our room probably for the first 6 months I’m thinking (since that’s about how long the others lasted in our room), and then we’re moving him upstairs to share a room with Lowell.

It should be easy to transition the nursery space to a reading/lounging space once the crib is out. I have my hopes set on a sleeper sofa for the litter of children that always want to sleep in our room on Friday nights.

The crib is the “Hudson” by Babyletto in all espresso. We HAD to get a new crib since Lowell busted out the rails in the last one. This one is smaller in scale, which is perfect for this space, and will be great when we move it into a room with a twin size bed. It’s still a full-size crib, though, and even comes with a toddler rail.

And yes, that’s a (faux) shiplap wall. Call us suckers for a trend, but it wound up being a great way to add some dimension and character to the space for very little money. Scott also put a lot of work into adding crown moulding around the room.

I asked my immensely talented friend, Mandy, to make me something custom for a mobile, and I love this fluffy-cloud inspired piece she came up with!

We had to pack a lot of function into this tiny space, and I think we were successful. We have plenty of storage here for his clothes (current size only, and the rest is stored in our closet for now), swaddles, booties, hats, first aid and grooming basics…

And we also have plenty of room for disposable & cloth diapers, since we’ll be using both in the beginning, at least. I love using the FINTORP system from Ikea to organize above the diaper changing area!

For our bedding, I had to tame my aspirations a bit. I really wanted a gorgeous, expensive blanket from Pendleton… until I read it was dry clean only. HARD PASS. We’ll have to give up the high-end bedding until there aren’t 4 kids and 3 dogs trying to climb in bed with us every night. The good news is the blanket I wound up getting wasn’t just a super great price (less than $50 for a king size!), but it also washes beautifully.

I did splurge a little on a couple gray linen pillow shams from Etsy to tie in with the gray linen crib skirt. I also love that they give the bed some varied texture, especially in contrast to the super smooth, super breathable white sheets by Bedgear. I love having white bedding as a backdrop for pictures of baby in those early days when you spend all your time in bed anyway. It’s one of my favorite tips for photographing a newborn!

This deserves a drum roll.

I’ll wait.

For the first time EVER, we have framed pictures of us up in our room!

Here’s a closer look at the curtains. Those rods came with the house, and originally I hated them, but they’ve grown on me. I like the pop of glam they give the space. And I like that they were free.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

We have no shortage of lovely, soft blankets for this baby, so I had Scott build a simple blanket ladder to store them.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

Blanket ladder- built by my husband, using this tutorial / Swaddling blankets & thick blankets – Bebe Au Lait & Aden + Anais

We’ve had this Ikea dresser and the matching, smaller one for years, and have been really happy with them considering how little we paid. This wall was pretty simple. We just balanced out the space with the blanket ladder on one side, and a leaning floor mirror (secured to the wall) on the other.

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

Dresser- Ikea / Floor mirror- Target, chalk paint and distressing by me/ Battery operated candle and copper geo orbe thingy- Home Goods

I think that brings us all the way around the room and to the end of our tour!

Master Bedroom with Nursery Nook | BabyRabies.com

A HUGE thanks, again, to Carousel Designs – BabyBedding.com-  for working with us on the room and for sponsoring this post. I can not wait to get our personalized crib sheet with baby’s name on it. But first, must have a baby! (Official due date is this Friday, if you’re wondering.)

The Big Bedroom Makeover Giveaway!

by Jill May 31, 2013
written by Jill

I had SO much fun re-doing our wretched master bedroom this month.

Okay, maybe it wasn’t “fun” while we were doing it, but I like to tell myself it was worth it, and like my wedding, I plan to erase the memories of me crying over the bad stuff and replace them with the word “fun.”

BedroomBeforeAfter

Worth it.

Right?

So I’ve already told you how we chose the color pallet and used Sherwin-Williams paints. There’s still time to enter to win $100 to Sherwin-Williams over on this post (where you can also see more before pics of the room) and this post.

Now, I’m going to tell you a little more about the rest of the room. And then I’m going to give one of you lots of cool stuff to makeover your own room! Get excited!

The focal point of the room is this gorgeous headboard Scott designed and built himself, using leftover pieces of our red oak hardwood floor. The same stuff we used to build our dining room table. We  will be using up the rest of that for many projects to come! This will eventually become an entire bed frame, complete with footboard, and we plan to get plans for it up over here. But don’t hold your breath. It’s going to take a while.

Here’s a pic of the headboard in progress, to give you more of an idea of the detail (and the awful paint color we had before… and the sad bedding). He’s really so effing talented.

Headboard

The duvet and shams are from Cassa Decor – the Letto Studio line by Kassatex. White. I know. I know! But the thing is? I love it. It’s bright and brings in some much needed contrast to the dark gray walls. It provides a lovely backdrop for the rest of the pillows, and (please don’t hate me for this, eco-friends) if it gets really gross, we can bleach it. The quality is like something from a high-end hotel. I’ve always said I want a “hotel” room for our room. Who doesn’t love fresh, crisp, soft bedding?

And about those pillows. I may not sew much, but I have sewn many a pillow cover in my day. They’re nothing but straight lines, so I feel very accomplished when I tackle them.

I headed to my favorite Dallas fabric store- City Craft– for inspiration. Once again, they helped me pick out some fantastic, coordinating (but not too matchy matchy) fabrics that I turned into pillow covers of all sizes. The body pillow cover is made from this glorious Driftwood Slate faux bois, and the others are made with a tartan and a Historic Tile print from the Joel Dewberry Notting Hill line.

06050082a88111e291b222000a1f98fa_7

That lovely frame above the bed? It’s by Poppy Tree Frames. Not familiar? Prepare to fall in love. If you’re already in love, you know the obsession of which I speak. That’s a Nebula collage frame in Little Boy Blue. It holds 2 5x7s and one 8×10. I originally purchased it to put actual pictures in, but I love the way the scraps of fabric tie the whole room together.

We also brought in new carpet, and a white Hemnes dresser from Ikea (previously in Leyna’s room). I mentioned before that we’ve had those side tables for ages, and we painted them white and added new hardware. The table lamps were a clearance buy at Target last summer.

BedroomMakeoverGiveaway

I can’t giveaway everything that went into making over our bedroom, but I think I can give one of you a great start on making over your own. In total, I’ve got over $450 in prizes for one lucky (US resident) winner. Here’s the good stuff:

One Letto Studio Duvet and Shams (any size and color) or $250 toward any Kassatex brand bedding you choose from Cassa Decor
$100 credit to City Craft (www.citycraftonline.com) for fabrics of your choice
$100 credit to Poppy Tree Frames for frame(s) of your choice

Also, I’m throwing in a priceless, autographed copy of my good friends’ book Guide To Baby Sleep Positions, by the hilarious duo at HowToBeADad.com Charlie and Andy. Because here’s the deal: Now that our room is the comfiest in the house, we couldn’t keep the kids out if we guarded it with wild pigs. They both find their way into our bed most nights. So this book is basically the story of my life right now, and it seemed an appropriate addition to the prize pack.

BabySleepPositions

Ready to enter? GO RAFFLECOPTER GO!

Disclosure- Cassa Decor provided the duvet and shams for me at no cost. All other products discussed in this post I purchased myself.

Our Bedroom Finally Looks Civilized- The Reveal

by Jill May 20, 2013
written by Jill

It was a long week of home renovations. Per usual, I always grossly underestimate how much time and energy a project will take. We were running on little sleep and too much caffeine by the time we finished, but our room? Oh my. It’s like we imported it from another house. Hardly recognizable compared to what it was before. Let me just remind you what that looked like…

IMG_1800

And now? This…

IMG_2313

In my “before” post, I mentioned that Sherwin-Williams was sponsoring this series, and that I used their Chip It!™ service to come up with the color scheme of the room. I said our plans were to paint most of the walls Gray Shingle, and do an Indigo Batik accent wall behind the bed.

Screen Shot 2013-04-07 at 11.34.13 AM

And we did. Both colors were from HGTV® HOME by Sherwin-Williams. It looked… it looked like we would probably like it after we got used to it. Really, the Indigo Batik was just SO much darker and bluer than we were anticipating, and the wall behind our bed is big, so it was a pretty powerful statement. I was okay with it, though. I found fabrics that would tie it all together. I was prepared to bring in a lot of white to brighten up the space.

I was 85% committed to it at 12:30am when Scott, as he was finishing painting some Indigo Batik trim, casually mentioned, “Huh… people are going to think we’re huge Cowboys fans.” I looked at him confused. It was late. I was delirious. I thought surely he was, too.

“What?” He nodded toward the blue wall, “Oh, navy blue and gray walls…” “Oh. My. God. I HATE IT,” I blurted out.

Let me clarify that we live in Dallas, and I am NOT saying we are anti-Cowboys. We root for them when it’s convenient and fun. But… we live in Dallas, and we are NOT die hard Cowboys fans. If we lived anywhere else, I’d let it go. But living here? It’s just going to be assumed that this room was meant to be a shrine to a football team. I couldn’t get past it. The next morning, Scott busted his butt to get the Indigo Batik wall painted over before the carpet installers came. The room is now entirely Gray Shingle, and I’m obsessed with it.

Now, this doesn’t mean we threw the whole color palette out the window, though. No, it was actually super useful pulling the room together! I wound up going a slightly different direction with the fabrics I used to accent the space, sticking with more of the navy and orange, and leaving out the pinks. This happened to coordinate perfectly with the lamps we already had (a clearance buy from Target last year).

(I’ll have another post up later this week with more details on the fabric, the frame, the duvet cover, etc.)

IMG_2312

 Also, YAY CARPET!

We painted our rundown side tables with Sherwin-Williams new ProClassic paint in Extra White with a satin finish. It’s a “waterbased acrylic-alkyd,” or, as explained to me by the super helpful assistant manager at my Sherwin-Williams store, a hybrid between water based and oil based paints. It’s durable like an oil-based paint but without the harsh smell and difficult clean up. Of course, we also added carpet. HUGE difference.

I told Scott I now know what that “new house smell” is. It’s fresh paint and new carpet, AND I LOVE IT.

Making Our Bedroom More Magical, Less Frat House

by Jill May 1, 2013
written by Jill

If this were an episode of Cribs, I’d be all, “This is where the magic happens!” And then you’d be like, “How exactly did you get pregnant again?”

IMG_1800

Ahhh… our beautiful master bedroom. Be sure, I cleaned this up for the pictures, folks. Like, really cleaned it good, and got all the dirty socks off the floor and everything. You’re welcome.

So, you can probably understand why when I got an opportunity to do a couple sponsored posts for Sherwin-Williams that focused around re-doing a room of our house based on their cool paint selection tools, I BEGGED AND PLEADED FOR THEM TO PLEASE PICK ME.

I mean, yeah…

IMG_1802
And, they did choose me! REJOICE! It’s a classic problem, I think. We put all our effort into beautifying the spaces of our home that others see, or the spaces our kids live in while neglecting our own bedroom. My kids’ rooms look like something out of a magazine (not to toot my own horn, but we put TONS of time and effort into decorating their spaces).

Our room? Looks like something out of a frat house… the part in the basement where they make the freshman sleep. Nothing matches. Not a single piece of purposefully bought furniture in there, except for the glorious king size bed, which we finally broke down and bought last year after one too many trips to the chiropractor, and one too many kid’s foot in my face.

IMG_1803

So we’re going big with this re-do. This isn’t just about the paint colors. BUT, that’s exactly where we started. Sherwin-Williams has this cool color selection tool that lets you upload a picture and turn it into a color palette. It’s called Chip It!™ and it’s addicting.

I knew I wanted this space to be something unique to Scott and me, while still keeping with the colors in the rest of the house. We have A LOT of gray going on. I joke that when we list our house for sale someday, we can title it the 50 Shades Of Gray House. Scott thinks that will send people the wrong message. Pfft.

So, I uploaded this beautiful picture that Lyndsay from Life In Motion Photography (Austin, TX) took of us last year during a Love Light session. I love the colors, I love the emotion. I love that it feels more like a piece of art than just a photograph. I want to incorporate it into the room, along with a few others she took.

Screen Shot 2013-04-07 at 11.34.13 AM

We decided to go with Gray Shingle for the walls, and Indigo Batik for an accent wall behind our bed… which Scott is building from leftover pieces of hardwood flooring and staining, we think, a light cherry.

We hope to add lots of white to the room with bedding and other furniture pieces to keep the room from feeling too dark. I’m also toying with bringing a bit of these fabrics in:

Crazy Love Priscilla Orange - Discount Designer Fabric - Fabric.com

Crazy Love Priscilla Orange – Discount Designer Fabric – Fabric.com (clipped to polyvore.com)
Riley Blake Chevron Small Orange

Riley Blake Chevron Small Orange (clipped to polyvore.com)
I’m anxious to get this renovation completed this week! I can’t wait to finally have a room that feels put together, pretty, and, like, I’d be okay leaving our bedroom door open when we have guests over.
Stay tuned for part 2- the reveal!
How do you find color inspiration for your home projects? Tell us in the comments below, and you just might win a $100 Sherwin-Williams gift card from BlogHer!
