By far, the coolest thing to come out of releasing my Picture Play eBook back in November, has been seeing all of the incredible edits that people have been doing since they’ve read it.

Inside the Picture Play Facebook group (you get access with your purchase, no extra fee!) readers have been sharing photos ever single day.

I’m totally blown away.

If you’re still feeling frustrated with your phone photography and editing skills, take a look at what’s possible with just your iPhone or Android and some super cheap or free apps.

How I Edited This Pic On My Phone

by Jill March 17, 2017
written by Jill

I’ve been doing a bit of this lately over on Instagram now that they’ve introduced “albums.” I take a fully edited pic and break down the steps and apps I used to get from straight out of (phone) camera to the final image.

I thought I’d do one here today, showing you how I documented Wallace’s newest milestone- the airplane baby phase, since quite a few people asked how I got this shot.

To start, I had to rest the phone on my boobs, and set the timer. It took a few test shots to figure out proper placement…

Mobile Phone Picture Play | BabyRabies.com

And I had to switch from the 3-second timer to the 10-second timer because I needed more time to get Wallace’s attention.

Mobile Phone Picture Play | BabyRabies.com

Once I got a shot I was happy with (after about 4 tries), I took it into a new app I just downloaded called TouchRetouch (also available in Google Play) because I wanted to get rid of that ugly vent.

Mobile Phone Picture Play | BabyRabies.com

I selected “Object Removal” in the bottom left corner, then I used the brush, painted over the vent, and pressed “go.”

Mobile Phone Picture Play | BabyRabies.com

Voila! Bye bye, vent.

Next, I opened A Color Story app (also in Google Play), and used my very favorite tool- curves, to pull up the shadows a bit and brighten up his face.

Mobile Phone Picture Play | BabyRabies.com

I decided to turn this black and white, so I went into the B&W set of filters, and chose Audrey. This is my go-to B&W filter for this app because it brightens the skin tone up, and gives a good amount of contrast and clarity. I kept this at full strength.

Mobile Phone Picture Play | BabyRabies.com

So then I took it over to Instagram. Now, technically, IG only has a few true B&W filters, but if your image is already B&W to begin with, all the filters play into that.

Mobile Phone Picture Play | BabyRabies.com

I liked what Ludwig had going on here, but took it down to about half strength.

And that’s how I took this picture from eh, pretty cool…

Like I mentioned, I’ve shared a few other photo editing tutorials on my @BabyRabies Instagram account. You can find them with the #BabyRabiesPicturePlay hashtag. Here are a couple! Be sure to click through to see all the steps.

Time for another picture play! This time with only #acolorstory app. This pic I took of the @magnolia silos today wasn’t bad, but I gave it a pop and some sun flare for extra sparkle. ? I started with the Deep filter “true” not quite at 100. ? Then I went to the Curves tool and pulled the shadows up brightened by pulling the top dot down and left and the bottom dot straight up just a bit. ? Added a little warmth with the white balance tool. ? Went to the flares effects, and chose #7. ? Moved the flare up to the top right corner (where there was already a natural bright spot) and decreased the effect a bit. ? That’s it! #babyrabiespictureplay

I didn’t have time to share one of my fav mobile photo editing tricks in my FB live #babyrabiesplaygroup today so I’m sharing here now. ? How to remove blemishes? Wallace is always scratching his face (no matter how much I cut his nails) in his unending quest to suck his thumb. ??Snapseed is a free app that has a “healing tool” Once you select it the tool, zoom in a bit on the area you want to heal. This takes some practice. Sometimes it will just heal a big streak instead of zooming in. Reverse it and try again. ??Heal blemishes by simply tapping on them. A red dot will appear, and then it will clone out that spot. Sometimes it will put something weird in its place like a nostril hole. Don’t fret. Reverse. Try again. Maybe zoom in a bit more and retry. (This also works for healing your own zits. Take my word for it.) ??Now that everything is healed, I’ll take you through the rest of my edits. First, I open in A Color Story app. ?? I go to tools, then curves. Then I pull the middle of the curve up just a bit to brighten the skin. ?? My go-to filter here is “Everyday” under Essentials. Note that I’m not using it at 100. ?? Once I take it to IG, I like to use the Clarendon filter but scaled wayyyy back, to maybe 20ish. I just like the little bit of cool and blue it adds. ???????????? I loved talking about mobile phone photography and editing today! If you missed it, the episode will stay up on my FB pg- Facebook.com/babyrabiesblog Catch me tomorrow over on @bebeaulait! I’m doing an IG takeover for them. #babyrabiespictureplay

10 Ways My Apple Watch Makes Life As a Parent Easier

by Jill January 13, 2016
written by Jill

When I made my Christmas Wish List for my husband, I threw the Apple Watch on there as the very last thing, never actually thinking he’d get it for me. I didn’t even know if I truly wanted it, but my list needed more stuff for him to choose from. I wondered if maybe it was more gimmicky than practical.

And then he got me one- a beautiful 38mm rose gold with lavender band. I love her, I love her, I love her! Not just because she’s gorgeous, but she makes my life easier. No gimmicks. Definitely practical.

A photo posted by Jill Krause (@babyrabies) on Dec 27, 2015 at 12:38pm PST

Here are just some of the ways my Apple Watch makes my life as a multitasking, work at home parent easier.

Calendar reminders

I can’t tell you how many times this has saved me already. Most days I get so immersed in work that I used to look up at the clock and couldn’t believe my 2nd grader was going to be walking through the door any minute. No more surprises, and no more moments when I see a strange number calling through and suddenly remember it’s time for an important call. Whether I accept a meeting invite for a business call, or a set a reminder to go off 10 minutes before my son gets out of school, the watch alerts me with a gentle buzz that’s impossible to overlook.

Calendar function
Beyond the alerts, it’s easy to access and scroll through my calendar, and even input new events via voice dictation. I hardly ever use Siri on my phone, but she’s a natural extension of the watch and she does a pretty great job of understanding me.

Weather at a glance

The current weather, including temp and chance of precipitation, is displayed on my watch face. Seems small, but it’s nice to glance down and know whether I need to wrap the toddler in his warm coat or if a jacket will do before we run out the door.

Texting

It’s SO nice to immediately receive all texts and reply quickly without having to keep my phone on me. Our two oldest spend their afternoons running up and down our street, playing with all the other kids (best. street. ever), and all the parents keep in touch by texting to let each other know where they’ve all landed. It’s pretty key that I get texts on time, especially when someone is looking for their kid or letting me know mine is at their house. I can reply with the quick phrases that are already in there (you can add your own too) or I can use voice dictation.

Evernote

Love me some Evernote. The best marriage of Evernote and the Apple Watch that I’ve uncovered is the list function. Make a grocery list in Evernote, access it from your phone, check off items on your watch as you pick them up in the store. AMAZING.

Phone calls

I think everyone realizes you can take a call on your watch. That seems like the most obvious use. BUT did you know that your toddler can be on your phone playing a game or watching YouTube and you can still make a receive calls from your watch? I’m just saying this really comes in handy when I’m grocery shopping, checking off my Evernote list, and my husband calls to tell me to add a few more items to the list. No need to rip the phone from the toddler’s hands, causing a meltdown in aisle 9.

Directions while driving

I try very hard to keep my hands off my phone while driving, and take distracted driving seriously, especially when my kids are in the car with me. But sometimes I need directions to places, and I use my maps app on my iPhone. With the Apple Watch, the directions pop up on my watch face, and it buzzes to let me know a turn is coming up. Far safer than holding my phone in one hand while I drive, or looking down at it on the dash.

Staying active

The watch comes with an activity tracker that tracks your daily steps, calories burned, distance walked. It also reminds you to stand up every hour, and gives you a goal of 30 minutes of exercise a day (you can adjust that, that’s the default). Throughout the day, I get gentle buzz reminders to stand or encouragement to keep moving, along with a visual of where I am for all my goals for the day.

In addition to that, I’ve added Seven, a 7 minute workout app, to it. I try to do at least one 7 minute circuit a day because it’s just 7 minutes, right? Meanwhile, while I’m doing that, my activity tracker is counting all of it.

Killing time

Just like the iPhone, it’s great for getting a whole lot of nothing done, which comes in handy when I find myself rocking a nosy toddler to sleep who is too distracted by my phone these days. I’ve downloaded the Rules! app- a game (though I think I hate how panicked it makes me feel), and have some apps I like to browse, like Zulily and Craigslist. They are really paired down in comparison to their phone counterparts, but still fun.

Distancing myself from my phone

Yesterday I saw an important email come through via watch notification. I could tell from the first sentence preview that I needed to reply ASAP, so I asked the kids to sit tight for a minute and hopped on my computer. Most of the time, though, my emails can wait. It’s nice to know I can leave my phone behind and still know when/if something urgent comes in.

ALSO RAD?
If you have the BabyRabies app (and I mean, you do, right?) you’ll get notifications every time I put up a new post. You can get notifications for a lot of your apps that are already on your phone.

I’ve only had my watch for a few weeks, so I’m sure I’ve yet to unlock loads of potential. And some of you who have one, I’m sure, probably have some other cool ways you use it to make your life easier, so PLEASE tell us in the comments!

New iPhone For Me Means iPod For The Kids- Awesome Tutorial

by Jill June 8, 2015
written by Jill

I upgraded to the phone beast known as the iPhone 6 last week. All my fears of it being too large were put to rest when I successfully nursed Lowell to sleep while scrolling Facebook with one hand.

It’s the beginning of a beautiful addiction friendship.

I was prepared to trade my old 5 in, but when I learned that you can’t really do the thing where you buy the discounted phone with a 2 year contract, but instead MUST make monthly payments on it (unless you buy it full price), and that they would only give me $70 for it, I decided to keep it.

It’s in fantastic shape. I’ve kept it in an Otterbox since I got it. Plus, Apple replaced the battery for me this year.

Lots of life left.

OldIPhoneToIPod

Technically, it’s Lowell’s phone, in that that was the name I gave it. Leyna and Kendall both have tablets, and I really need an extra device to plug my nearly 2 year old into.

IT IS SUMMER, YOU KNOW.

A photo posted by Jill Krause (@babyrabies) on Jun 8, 2015 at 10:17am PDT

Really, it’s just a “phone” (but basically an iPod touch) that’s set up for the kids now.

It won’t make calls, but it will connect to wifi. It won’t text, but it will iMessage.

Did you know that’s a thing you can do with an old iPhone?? I mean, I figured it was something that could be done, but didn’t really know how to go about it, so I did some googling and found an excellent tutorial by Bos Organization.

It was super simple to follow, and he covered things I didn’t even think of, including how to organize and set up the apps in a way that’s not confusing for the kids.

All the fun stuff is on the first page.

IMG_1817

And all the other stuff is on the 2nd page, including a folder for “extras” including Safari, the phone, settings, and the app store. It’s not like the kids can’t access them there, but they shouldn’t be too intrigued by them.

IMG_1819

But, if they do find them, this baby is LOCKED DOWN. The tutorial walked me through how to set up all these extra security steps that I would have totally looked over on my own.

One tip I loved was to make a lock screen with your number on it in case it gets lost. I found some images on the Thomas and Friends website, and threw this together in Photoshop (with my actual phone number).

Untitled-1_edited-1

If you’re wondering, the dimensions are 640 by 1136 pixels.

I have 3 movies in the Videos app from the iTunes store for them to watch when we are away from wifi. They are so in love with the PBS Kids app, that I anticipate some frustration when they can’t access it in the car or while we’re out.

I plan to get a few kids books in the book app soon, too.

Also, I did go ahead and get him a fresh new Otterbox cover because my old one was 1. falling apart and 2. was probably a biohazard.

IMG_1821

I can not endorse this case enough. We are HUGE Otterbox fans.

This is not sponsored, this guy doesn’t even know I’m posting about this. I just stumbled upon this great resource and wanted to blog it so it’s searchable and shareable.

BECAUSE SUMMER.

Again, the tutorial is on BosOrganization.com- The Ultimate Guide To Transforming Your Old iPhone To A Kid’s Dream iPod Touch.
