Easy DIY Halloween Costumes: LEGO & Ladybug

by Jill October 26, 2012
October 26, 2012

If you’re like a lot of parents out there, it’s the weekend before Halloween and you still don’t have a costume for your kid yet.

I’m usually one of those people, but I had to bust them out late into the night a couple of days ago because the kids had their first costume festival last night. Once I rounded up all the materials I needed to make each of them – a Ladybug and a LEGO- they came together really quick.  Thought I’d go ahead and post them both tonight just in case someone out there is in need of an idea or 2.

I’m not saying these are going to win any prizes for originality, as they’ve both been done before, but they’re cute and they’re easy, so there’s that.

First up, Kendall’s Lego costume.

I followed this super easy tutorial from Country Living. All the supplies (not including the pants and shirt he wore under it) were around $17. I was able to get the box, spray paint (2 cans) and duck tape at Walmart. I picked up the 8 round cardboard boxes to use as the “bumps” at Hobby Lobby after I had no luck finding them at Michaels.

I “winged” (heh) Leyna’s Ladybug costume.

I cut 2 half circles of red felt out and hot glued them to the back of a black turtleneck I got at Walmart. (I wonder how many Halloween costumes come together with the help of Garanimals?) Then I hot glued black circles of felt onto the wings.

Then I paired the top with a red pettiskirt from TheHairbowCompany.com (and I *think* I saw some at Target last week, too, since you won’t have time for shipping at this point), some black leggings and some furry black Crocs she already had. A little ladybug hair clip and a ladybug bag I painted for her complete the ensemble.

My Leyna Bug the Ladybug.

The hardest part was tracking down everything we needed for Kendall’s costume, but once I was home with all the supplies, it took Scott and I about an hour to finish both of these. Of course, they had to dry overnight. So leave yourself some time for that.

And here’s a link to a more detailed tutorial for Leyna’s costume last year- a Parrot.

How cute! You guys are creative! I am too lazy! 🙂 I bought a secondhand Winne the pooh which acts as a jacket and warm pants. She has been wearing it for weeks. It cost me 7$. 🙂

The Lego costume is impressive! You could also use tuna cans for the bumps. But then, that would be an awful lot of tuna.

Happy Halloween!

Super cute costumes! My partner and I are actually hosting a construction/destruction themed party in a few weeks in honour of our house getting ripped down to make a road. I think we’ll go as a Lego cube and a Lego man! Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

Just FYI, I was accessing your website via my RSS reader on my iPhone and halfway through loading your page, it redirected me to a p0rn site… I went out and back in again and it didn’t happen again, but thought I should let you know in case it was a hack or something!

Cute! My dd was a ladybug with a homemade tutu last year. This year she is a unicorn with a tutu – and under it ~ Garanimals 🙂

It still makes me grin every time I see “Leyna Bug”. I just got a card in the mail from my mama last week calling me the very same thing. Cutie cute cute DIY costumes! Happy Halloween!

How adorable!!!

I really want my kids to be legos for Halloween one of these years. As much as they love to play with legos you’d think that would be so easy to convince them! I even had plans I had found online (and put them on my blog since I figured I should do something with them.) My son has had his costume planned forever (Iron Man) and my daughter has chosen about 3,000 different costumes before I finally said, “You’re going to be a black cat! There! Done!”

I love all of the costumes with tutus! There have been some really adorable ones on pinterest using tulle. Happy Halloween! 🙂

I’ve also seen the lego done with cups, either dixie cups or Styrofoam cups whatever you’ve got on hand, pretty inexpensive too!

I made a yellow Lego brick costume for myself when I was in high school – I used Yogurt and Cottage cheese containers for the bumps.

The core of your writing while sounding agreeable originally, did not really sit very well with me after some time. Someplace throughout the paragraphs you actually managed to make me a believer but only for a while. I nevertheless have a problem with your leaps in assumptions and one would do well to fill in those gaps. When you can accomplish that, I could surely be amazed. FXQWLUMUKJSCHAHMQ
