My friend Sarah posted this pin on Pinterest this weekend, and it made the Popular page- for good reason!

It’s funny how we spend all this money on toys and entertainment for our kids, and it’s the $3 roll of painters tape in the garage that keeps them occupied the longest.
It’s a rainy, cold day here and I neglected to plan a play date, so that means all the conditions are perfectly brewing for maximum whining and big headaches. I remembered Sarah’s super idea, so I busted out a half roll of painters tape and randomly taped some shapes on our floor. It started out as an obstacle course, and then it turned into a town.
Paint Tape Town
We built buildings, drove cars and trucks down the blue streets, and even put some fields of grass and parking lots in (thanks to some FLOR carpet tile samples I’ve been hanging on to).
For all the attitude and the tantrums, I love this age. His imagination inspires me and his persistence amazes me. That log cabin fell down at least 4 times before he got it built exactly how he envisioned, windows and all. It’s “the office where daddy works, very far away.”
I think we’ll be buying more painters tape soon. Heck, I think I’ll be giving a roll of it at every birthday this year. Thanks for the inspiration, Sarah!

This is a fantastic idea!! I can see doing this for train tracks. Both kids get so angry at the wooden tracks because they always break apart. We may have to try this out this week!
We just used some as train tracks yesterday for my son’s big Thomas Playhut. Painters tape is a great toy!
This is an awesome idea!
I can’t get over how much of a BOY he is instead of a baby or toddler.
Love it! We’re going to steal the idea back and make Paint Tape Town next weekend, lol.
What a great idea! If it wasn’t so late in the day, I’d totally bust this out now…. I’m sooo doing this tomorrow morning though 🙂
What a great idea! That would work well for indoor hopscotch as well. The possibilities are endless!
Not sure if you have it down there (Sam couldn’t find it last year) but look for the 3M green painters tape as it is made with recycled content!
I think B would love this….especially if it ended with a fort.
Too funny! I just bought tape today to make a road for the boys cars! I’m totally going to have to add a little ‘town’ design and maybe hopscotch in the hallway to the list. 🙂 Thanks! 🙂
Now that’s a good idea for a few bucks. Thanks for posting this, this is really helpful for me.

What a neat idea!!
I buy my 11 year old a roll (or 2 or 3) of duct tape for each holiday and birthday, no joke. For Valentine’s Day he got a pink roll. He loves it.
That is awesome! I think I may go stock up on more painters tape and throw in a roll of duct tape for Kendall’s gift today.
Just found your site. Love the name! Very cute. I totally agree. I once blogged that I was going to get rid of all my kids toys and just give them recycle-able materials to play with. This looks like fun. I’ll be pinning!
