Potty Pool Party!

by Jill September 22, 2009
September 22, 2009

Potty training is approaching. Maybe not as quickly as I’d like, but it is on the horizon. I’ve got some of the tools ready- the little potty, the Cheerios for target practice. And I’ve made it a point to stuff my dignity deep down in my gut and dutifully follow the number one rule of teaching toddlers to become one with the toilet; I openly invite Kendall in each and every time I go and make a big deal of flushing, thus making a giant fool of myself.

Truthfully, he’s never shown much interest. He’d rather bust into my stash of tampons and proudly display them to me as, “Mmmmm… Nack!” No, honey. No. That is not a Mum Mum. Now give it back to mommy. These effing plastic applicators are expensive.

Scott’s been showing Kendall how boys pee in the potty for a long time, starting with when he was a month old, strapped to dad’s chest in the Baby Bjorn. One day, from deep within a postpartum haze, I heard, “You’re going to have to figure this out eventually. Lets do it.” Then the bathroom door shut behind both baby and daddy. I think it’s safe to say it was probably the only thing that made me laugh that day.

Well, Scott came through again last night, big time, with a huge LOL moment when he relayed this special father/son potty moment to me. It happened while I was out running errands. Scott stepped into the bathroom to pee, leaving the door open, of course. Kendall followed behind shortly after. Upon stepping through the door, Kendall’s eyes lit up and he ran, full force, hands grasping, straight for the stream of urine. It was like he just discovered his very own splash park in his bathroom. Wheeeee!! Scott, not quite done relieving himself yet, had no choice but to fend him off by lifting a leg to keep him at bay. I’m really pretty impressed with his acrobatic abilities… and his aim.

Could this be considered a sign of “interest”? Could I somehow spin this into a fun potty training game? Could be that I’m reading too much into it. Could be that Kendall’s just really missing the pool.

Ahhh… see what I did there ^^^?? Just when you think I’m getting all sentimental and sappy on your ass, SHAZAM! I hit you with good dish on toddler fascination with bodily fluids.

Kendall is 16 months and nearly 3 weeks old.

If your 16 month old potty trains before my 3 yr old, I will hang myself.

You’ve been warned.

This is classic. I had to share this with my husband. But I don’t even want to think about potty training yet and Aidan is only 3 weeks behind K. We still haven’t mastered walking!

Brady is obsessed with the toilet and water. He’s fascinated by his little private pool/pond. And yes, he too runs in like a wild man when Kev accidentally leaves the door open to pee. Kev has definitely learned how to finish while Brady is desperately trying to get in the stream.

Hilarious! Glad your husband is so bendy, or that could have been a huge mess.

There aren’t too many things that actually make me burst out laughing while at work, but that did! My almost 10 month old follows me into the bathroom all the time. Do you know how hard it is to do your business with a person under your feet?! His fascination is with doors right now and closing them is a no go.
