My friend Sarah posted this pin on Pinterest this weekend, and it made the Popular page- for good reason!

It’s funny how we spend all this money on toys and entertainment for our kids, and it’s the $3 roll of painters tape in the garage that keeps them occupied the longest.

It’s a rainy, cold day here and I neglected to plan a play date, so that means all the conditions are perfectly brewing for maximum whining and big headaches. I remembered Sarah’s super idea, so I busted out a half roll of painters tape and randomly taped some shapes on our floor. It started out as an obstacle course, and then it turned into a town.

Paint Tape Town

We built buildings, drove cars and trucks down the blue streets, and even put some fields of grass and parking lots in (thanks to some FLOR carpet tile samples I’ve been hanging on to).

For all the attitude and the tantrums, I love this age. His imagination inspires me and his persistence amazes me. That log cabin fell down at least 4 times before he got it built exactly how he envisioned, windows and all. It’s “the office where daddy works, very far away.”

I think we’ll be buying more painters tape soon. Heck, I think I’ll be giving a roll of it at every birthday this year. Thanks for the inspiration, Sarah!

  1. What a great idea! If it wasn’t so late in the day, I’d totally bust this out now…. I’m sooo doing this tomorrow morning though 🙂

  2. Not sure if you have it down there (Sam couldn’t find it last year) but look for the 3M green painters tape as it is made with recycled content!

I think B would love this….especially if it ended with a fort.

  3. Too funny! I just bought tape today to make a road for the boys cars! I’m totally going to have to add a little ‘town’ design and maybe hopscotch in the hallway to the list. 🙂 Thanks! 🙂

  4. I buy my 11 year old a roll (or 2 or 3) of duct tape for each holiday and birthday, no joke. For Valentine’s Day he got a pink roll. He loves it.

  5. Just found your site. Love the name! Very cute. I totally agree. I once blogged that I was going to get rid of all my kids toys and just give them recycle-able materials to play with. This looks like fun. I’ll be pinning!

  • Does bedtime change during the summer? Or does it stay the same all year? 🌙
  • We didn’t find any banana slugs on this 2 mile loop trail, but it did gift us with a bench. Calling that a win! #mothernurturemothernature

  • So grateful to have a partner who picks up what I drop, kisses the booboos I miss, reads the bedtime stories I have to work through, and loves our kids in ways I aspire to. Happy Fathers Day to him and all the dads who are doing this exhausting and exhilarating thing called parenthood 💖
  • It’s estimated 2,000 children (some as young as one) have been taken from their parents at our border in the last 6 weeks alone. MANY of these families are asylum seekers and it is not illegal to seek asylum. They left horrific conditions not because they want to break our laws or lose their children but because they want their children to live. Please join me and my friends from all over the political spectrum to oppose this unnecessary and cruel mandate that is traumatizing children and ripping families apart with no clear plan or guarantee for reunification. This is not a Democrat or Republican issue- it’s a HUMAN issue. I can not stay silent about this. My latest blog post has links and a script you can read to your Rep & Senators when you call them.
