My friend Sarah posted this pin on Pinterest this weekend, and it made the Popular page- for good reason!

It’s funny how we spend all this money on toys and entertainment for our kids, and it’s the $3 roll of painters tape in the garage that keeps them occupied the longest.

It’s a rainy, cold day here and I neglected to plan a play date, so that means all the conditions are perfectly brewing for maximum whining and big headaches. I remembered Sarah’s super idea, so I busted out a half roll of painters tape and randomly taped some shapes on our floor. It started out as an obstacle course, and then it turned into a town.

Paint Tape Town

We built buildings, drove cars and trucks down the blue streets, and even put some fields of grass and parking lots in (thanks to some FLOR carpet tile samples I’ve been hanging on to).

For all the attitude and the tantrums, I love this age. His imagination inspires me and his persistence amazes me. That log cabin fell down at least 4 times before he got it built exactly how he envisioned, windows and all. It’s “the office where daddy works, very far away.”

I think we’ll be buying more painters tape soon. Heck, I think I’ll be giving a roll of it at every birthday this year. Thanks for the inspiration, Sarah!

  1. What a great idea! If it wasn’t so late in the day, I’d totally bust this out now…. I’m sooo doing this tomorrow morning though 🙂

  2. Not sure if you have it down there (Sam couldn’t find it last year) but look for the 3M green painters tape as it is made with recycled content!

I think B would love this….especially if it ended with a fort.

  3. Too funny! I just bought tape today to make a road for the boys cars! I’m totally going to have to add a little ‘town’ design and maybe hopscotch in the hallway to the list. 🙂 Thanks! 🙂

  4. I buy my 11 year old a roll (or 2 or 3) of duct tape for each holiday and birthday, no joke. For Valentine’s Day he got a pink roll. He loves it.

  5. Just found your site. Love the name! Very cute. I totally agree. I once blogged that I was going to get rid of all my kids toys and just give them recycle-able materials to play with. This looks like fun. I’ll be pinning!

  • I always keep teething oil in my bag these days. He has FOUR top teeth trying to come through. 😫I try not to stick dirty fingers in his mouth, especially right after I pump gas. 🤢So I also keep some @handzies soap and water wipes with me. #inmypurse
  • On our way to get the other three. We really loved spoiling Wallace this week and living that one baby life for a bit. I think he's bored of us now, though.
  • So thankful for my mom who has the energy and patience to not only watch these three but to take them to the beach all by herself. Like, that's not even something I'd attempt. She's such a badass.
  • Oh yes we did turn this #joovyspoon into a #stlblues mobile! I'm in love with the idea of personalizing one of our fav baby things this way! Must confess it was Scott's idea, but I ran with it and came up with some other ideas in today's blog post. PLUS!!! @joovy is giving away one Spoon walker (US only). Link in bio!
  • Managed to distract him from his fever for a bit with some snacks and a spoon in the Nook highchair @joovy sent. It folds up super compact so I'm hopeful it will work well in the RV. #joovynook
  • Of course he'd get his first fever the week we sent the other three to NaNa's and planned to be super productive. #babydontcare we have a house to sell. Snuggles come first. ❤
  • Arlo grew a little.
  • Another day, another house, another nap. Nothing, not even NaNa, can keep him from his love for sleep from 3-5 pm. #loloyolo
