Hope you had a Happy Halloween!
My little pirate and parrot sure did.
Leyna rocked her No-Sew Parrot costume and Kendall’s pirate costume was thrown together with the help of his closet, the consignment store, and just a couple party store additions.
Since I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of finding him pirate boots or the annoyance of boot toppers, we embraced a more casual, beach-y pirate look.
The striped undershirt came from his closet (H&M). The jeans were last year’s, and now too short. I cut them jagged and a little shorter. The white dress shirt is a few sizes too big, purchased at the kid’s consignment store. The belt and sandals were part of his Easter outfit. We purchased the pirate hat on clearance at Walmart, and the eye patch and bag of gold doubloons (a must-have, thanks to Jake And The Neverland Pirates) were the only pieces purchased at the party store.
This was the first year I’ve done homemade costumes. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it every year, but I loved how they came out this time around.
Update on the Switch Witch/Candy Fairy:
I had a talk with Kendall yesterday, and he still wasn’t keen on the “Fahwy” coming to take his candy. So I took Gina’s advice and took the imaginary character out of the equation. I said, “Okay, we’ll tell the fairy not to come. Instead, do you think you’d like to take your candy to the sports store and use that to buy a new baseball bat? You’ll even get to pick it out.”
He eagerly agreed, so I think we’ll try to do that today or tomorrow. (He needs a new baseball bat anyway since daddy was playing with his and put a big dent in it.)
So, how was your Halloween? Did the Switch Witch or Candy Fairy come to visit your house?
Kendall is 3.5 and Leyna is 10 months old, and there is nothing like Halloween as the parent of young children.

Sometimes I think these kids are WAY smarter than we think! I tried to create an imaginary cow that made our 3 yr old milk that I added to his other milk instead of just telling him it was mama milk. He knew. He didn’t buy that I had just milked a tiny pink cow. Oh well.
At least Kendall is now complying with the candy switch! Due to food allergies, Noah knew he couldn’t have most of the candy he got (even though we collected cans). He did enjoy his switch of the yogurt pretzels he chose the day before. And he’s been explaining how he got cans for people who don’t have food and how he got to pick out special treats. WIN!
Love that!
I need to do something…my son’s allergic to nuts so that leaves Mama and Daddy to eat all the chocolate and peanut butter goodness. That’s NOT what we need. We may drop it off to a local Dentist who is shipping candy off to our troops.
We are doing this too! A local dentist participates. 🙂 We get a whopping dollar for every lb of candy..
Adorable costumes! 🙂 Your little Parrot is very cute!
I love his costume!
We didn’t do the Switch Witch because the baby clearly doesn’t grasp the concept we just played the “Mommy & Daddy Eat All the Leftover Candy” game. I don’t know if we won or lost.
We hardly have ANY candy. Ava only wanted to go to a few houses, and the heathen teens and tweens that came by took the massive bags of candy, leaving us with nothing.
Luckily there’s a pumpkin pie in the fridge.
We actually had no problems with the candy issue. He came home dumped his bag & I gave him one piece. He actually hasn’t asked for it at all. BUT he did have a giant cookie from a cookie bouquet someone sent us & has had one everyday since Halloween so it’s probably fair to say he’s eaten an entire bag of candy.
first of all- LOVE their costumes!!!!! where did you get the parrot one??? SO adorable! and that pumpkin is pretty awesome, too.
the switch witch also visited our house and left my two older girls puzzles and tracing books in exchange for their candy. i let them pick out 5 favorite pieces to keep in a bag to have throughout the week and then the rest went into a big bowl on our deck, and they chose the exact spot for the witch to come get it. it was like christmas morning the following day- both ran out to see what was left for them. they’re 4 and 2.5 and, luckily, were more interested in gifts than candy. not sure how that worked out so smoothly, but i’ll take it! (i also have a 10 month old daughter, so i love looking at pics of your little cutie!)
Thanks! I made her parrot costume. Here’s the post with the tutorial: https://www.babyrabies.com/2011/09/no-sew-infant-parrot-costume-tutorial/
