How Old Will You Be…
previous post
When I stop checking on you, watching for your breath, kissing your cheek and tucking you back in before I go to bed?
Kendall is 2.5… and I might just have to follow him to college to make sure he’s not too hot or too cold before I fall asleep.

My kids are 2 & 4, I check them every. single. night. My daughter, who is 2, HATES covers and socks…now that it is winter I cover her every night.
I will continue to check on them even when they come back for an overnight visit when they’re married & with kids.
Jennifer – Just be careful when they are married! My mother in law walked right in on us at a not so keen time 🙂
ive caught my mother in law checking on her son when weve stayed there… trouble is i was in bed with him. lol.. 🙂
When they don’t live with you, so I’m told. I still check on my 2 and 4 yr old, and last week I was wondering aloud when that would ever stop. My grandma then informed me that she STILL checks on my My 45 yr old uncle (who has lived with her since his divorce-slash-coming out of the closet.) And when they don’t live with you? You’ll call them every day.
Apparently we’ll never be free again. Never. Again.
Oh my gosh, that picture is so sweet! Forget about following me to college to tuck me in; Monmy saw Toy Story 3 and is pretty sure she won’t be letting me go away!
We still check on our kids every night. For some reason, lately I can’t be quiet enough to check on our oldest (he’s gonna be 2 in February) so my husband does it and I check on our 4 1/2 month old baby.
I still as him to make sure that he covered him up and that he was ok. 🙂
I agree, I don’t think it will ever stop. 🙂
Oh gosh, I will never stop!
Since we had Clara, I can’t check on one without also checking on the other. I’ll check on one, walk back to the living room and feel guilty for not checking the other and have to go back 🙂
Oh, I so check on our daughter every night. And every morning, if she hasn’t woken up before me. I’m always nervous I’m going to wake her, but I just can’t help myself!
Aww, I was JUST thinking this yesterday. I cuddle with Carter every night and I was thinking how sad it will be when he doesn’t want to cuddle with me anymore.
Ugh. I can’t even think about it. He’s only 2, so I hope I still have a good 6 to 20 years left 😉
You mean we’re supposed to stop??
I do the same thing & my daughter is 2 & 1/2 as well. I don’t think this will ever stop for us mothers. We will always think of our children & wonder about their safety & comfort as long as we live on this earth.
K is only 13 mo. and I check on her every night before bed. Usually her dad does too. And if he puts her to bed, I always ask how well she went down.
I know for a fact my mom checked on me when I was in high school, and possibly even when I came home from college under the guise of “dusting” or “dropping off clean clothes”.
Do you have the book “Love Your Forever”? If not you should buy it. It is the sweetest book ever and your post so accurately reflects it.
Awwww, I think someone is becoming very sentimental at the end of her pregnancy ::points to jill::
I still check. Always.
Mine are 17 (almost 18) 15 and 10. I still make sure they are breathing. College next year will be horrible! Do you think I can convince my oldest to set up Skype as she goes to bed so I can watch her sleep??
Am I heartless? I stopped last year from doing it every night.
( Kids age 7, 5 and 3) I am too exhausted. I send my hubby instead. I will give a kiss goodnight from time to time while they sleep because it is priceless. But I just feel like I get them every morning at 4 am on- for cuddles- so my hubby can have the early evening if he wants it! I do cherish the mornings. I love watching them breathe and rubbing the little bridge of the nose until their eyes close. I do check from the doorway to make sure the chests are rising and falling…does that count?:)
I love the picture. He could be on one of those old fashioned baby sleep ads.
I don’t think I ever will stop. And on those nights that I’m to tired to pull myself from the bed to do my nightly check I think “What if I miss this check and this is the one that counts?”
crap. you have me in tears here. my husband and I still check and cover at nearly a year and a half. and we still ask each other: was he breathing?
I’m sure that someday when he’s a teen, I’ll just realize that I don’t check anymore. I won’t remember how or when it stopped. And I am sure that on that day, I will cry.
I’m 30 years old and if I stay at my parents house, she checks on me. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled an my tonsils out a few years later, she made me stay at their house in case I would start bleeding at night…lol. I remember her checking on me every hour both nights.
When I moved back home, she would venture downstairs into the basement to check on me. If she didn’t see my moving, she would call my name until I replied. Her response every time was, “I just wanted to make sure you were breathing.” I was 21 at the time. That’s also how she found out about my first tattoo…busted!
