The age of defiance is upon us

And, frankly, I don’t know what to do. He’s 14 months old.  In many respects he still seems like a baby. In many others he seems like he’s one step away from snatching the keys to the car from my hand and flying out the door before I even have time to shout, “don’t do anything STUPID!”  He’s very much into pushing boundaries these days, testing us, and showing off.

For example, I will say, “No, Kendall.  Don’t play in the dog water.” He will look me dead in the eyes, put his hand in the dog water with the purpose and precision of a surgeon and then shake his head no, as if to say, “Let me get this straight. THIS is what you don’t want me to do, right? Putting my hand in the dog water just like this? Oh, yes.  I know that. See.  Noooooo.”

So is he understanding no? Can you punish a 14 month old for deliberately disobeying you when you aren’t even sure if he knows he’s disobeying you? I certainly don’t want to condone the behavior.  It’s one thing when he demonstrates with the dog water, but quite another if he is trying to break into the gas fireplace.

I’ve tried the distraction, positive reinforcement method, but I don’t think he’s getting it.  It’s such a weird place to be, in limbo between baby and child.  I’m not ready for a toddler yet.  I’m just now figuring out what to do with the baby.  Pause, please.

Kendall will be 14 months in the blink of an eye, and 14 shortly after

Memos From Mommy, Sponsored by Pangea Organics

I can’t lie. This blogging gig ain’t bad, especially when companies like Pangea Organics send me a Radiance Gift Set to try out and then agrees to give one away to a very lucky BabyRabies.com reader to enjoy. This stuff is niiiiiiice!  I’ve been using the facial cleanser, lip balm and eye cream every day for 6 days now, and I’ve used the scrub and mask twice. It smells lovely, it feels lovely, it leaves my face looking lovely.  It’s just lovely, really.  It’s like treating myself to my own little at home spa, which is something that is so rare around here, but I’m digging it. I need to do stuff like this for myself more often. Twice in the last week I’ve set aside 20 minutes during Kendall’s nap time to devote to a little beauty therapy. I do the whole routine- cleanser, scrub, mask, moisturize. It is so refreshing and my face feels so soft afterward.

Now, all that “lovely” stuff is great, but what’s even better is that Pangea Organics is a company with the planet in mind, too.

Pangea Organics was born out of the desire to do right by the planet, and is continually looking for more ways to live up to that dream and let you in on the fun, too.  Hence the idea behind the new Radiance Gift Sets.  Just when you think you’ve received a lovely box of organic skincare products — surprise!  You’ve also been given the gift of giving back to the earth by way of a spruce tree.  Inside the fibers of the Radiance gift boxes, there’s a Spruce Tree just waiting to be planted.

Americans emit, on average, five (5) tons of carbon per year per person?  While a single tree will absorb only one (1) ton of carbon dioxide in its lifetime. If everyone plants their gift box this year, there will collectively be 2,500 trees planted – that’s equivalent to NOT driving roughly 615,000 miles in one year!  The average lifespan of a spruce tree is 75 years, that’s an energy savings of approximately 46 million miles.  What a difference you can make in your very own backyard!

The gift boxes are 100% compostable, biodegradable, plantable and made from a Zero-Waste process using 100% post-consumer newsprint, without glues and dyes. The outer labels are made of uncoated Monadnock’s Astrolite PC 100 paper (100% post-consumer, FSC-certified, elemental chlorine free, and printed with vegetable based inks).

What we choose to consume today, directly impacts how we – and future generations – will live tomorrow.  With that in mind, 5% of net profits will go towards helping build the Pangea Institute, an emerging non-profit organization dedicated to researching and teaching all aspects of sustainable living and business practices.  Choosing to buy Pangea Organics means you, too, are positively impacting the future.

To enter to win your very own Radiance Gift Set by Pangea Organics, just submit your own Memo to your child/fetus/pet/pet rock/favorite nose hair in the comments section below. One will be randomly chosen by Random.org next Monday (only open to US residents this time, sorry other countries!).  If you aren’t lucky enough to win, you are still lucky enough to get a really great deal. This set, valued at $167, is only $100 with free shipping right now.  I know that’s a hefty chunk of change these days, but these are full size products you’re getting.  So if you’re in the market for these things, or even just in the market for a nice self indulgence or a great gift, this is a good value.  You can also buy the products individually.  I LOVE the scrub and the mask.

Memo time!

Dear Kendall,

What language are you speaking? What planet were you sent from? Where is your translator? “Duhb, cuck nab NAB gaaa GOG” means nothing to me. I’m so sorry you are frustrated with my lack of comprehension.  Perhaps I could find the meaning in the Baby Babble to English dictionary that surely shot out of my vagina, along with the parenting manual, but I have been looking for those things for nearly 14 months now, and, well, I’m afraid they got tossed out with the placenta. Please bear with me as I struggle to learn just what the hell you are saying.

Love always,

Mommy… say it with me, maahhhmmMEEE

Kendall is approaching 14 months old

****Entries are closed and according to Random.org the winner is comment #2.  Congrats Michelle!!! Hope you get those solid poops you’re requesting :) ********

Yay! Errr…kinda. (Starbucks progress report)

Got an email last week from Dottie, the District Manager I’ve been dealing with to get the changing tables installed in my local Starbucks. She informed me that three locations near me should have them installed by the end of the week! So we took a little family trip up the road tonight to see the goodies in person. We all three marched in, camera in hand, back to the bathrooms.  To say there were eyebrows being raised is an understatement.

I shouted in glee as I saw the little Koala Care sign, newly smooshed onto the wall, just a tad crooked, next to the bathroom doors.  However, my happy face quickly turned into a “Ugh, come ON. Are you kidding me?!” face when I discovered that there was only a changing table in the women’s restroom, and I confirmed with the barista that they had no intention of installing one in the men’s. Arrrghhhgghhh!!  Daddies do diapers, too!

Being the optimist I am, I decided to be happy, for the moment, for the one changing table, telling myself a guy could always commandeer the women’s room in the name of poopy diapers if need be.  I wiped my WTF face off, replaced it with the gleeful face, and Kendall and I struck a pose.  I’m fairly certain we were the very first ones to place a butt upon that changing table, but I’m positive we won’t be the last…. and that makes me happy.

I’m hoping to check out the rest of the locations next week, and will definitely be firing off some emails about why they can’t provide them in the men’s rooms, as well.  So… you know I’m going to ask. Have YOU contacted your local Starbucks District Manager to get changing tables installed in your local coffee house?

Kendall is 13 and a half months old and might have a crazy mom, but this crazy mom gets shit done.

Just a little shout out

Kendall pooped in the tub again tonight. I don’t know what it is lately. It’s like a game. He’s trying to poop in as many places other than his diaper. I think it’s some form of early rebellion, but it’s possible he was just so relaxed by the calming bubble bath we gave him with Nature’s Baby Organics Lovely Lavender Bubble Bath.  Adena, creator of the Nature’s Baby Organics line, was so sweet to send me a bottle of this along with a travel pack of Nature’s Baby Organics products to try out a while back, and I have to say, we are big fans.  Kendall seems to have inherited my sensitive skin, so it’s hard to find stuff I feel comfortable putting on his body.  I love how gentle all the products are, and the smell is just enough to be noticed, but not overwhelming like so many scented baby products. Kendall loves to play in the bubble bath, and we have used the heck out of that travel pack with all the road trips we’ve been making lately.  From the eco-friendly packaging to the organic ingredients, it’s stuff I’m happy to expose my son to. So thanks, Adena! We have really enjoyed all of it and will be picking up more at our local Central Market and Sprouts in the future.
